The acting US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Danielle Sassoon, a Yale Law School graduate who clerked for Justice Antonin Scalia, resigned on Thursday after being ordered to drop corruption charges against NYC Mayor Eric Adams.
The directive to dismiss the case came from Emil Bove, the acting Deputy Attorney General (AG), who ordered the case dropped, citing concerns about interference with Adams' ability to address immigration and crime issues.
Adams was indicted in September on five counts, including bribery and fraud charges, allegedly accepting $100K worth of free travel and hotel stays from Turkish nationals in exchange for official favors.
Trump's DOJ has egregiously overstepped by dismissing Adams' corruption charges, as it wasn't for legal reasons, but to leverage Adams' support for Trump's immigration agenda. This is a shameless display of abuse of power for political gain. By undermining the integrity of federal law enforcement, Trump has sent out a distressingly clear message — show fealty to the president and the law won't apply to you.
While Mayor Adams isn't a typical Republican ally, his prosecution, whether justified or not, was clearly politically motivated due to his criticism of the last administration's immigration policies. Liberal federal and state authorities only went after him because he broke from their mandatory talking points. Americans care more about stopping their great cities from being overrun by illegal immigrants than they do investigating alleged free plane tickets.
