US District Judge George O'Toole Jr. paused Pres. Donald Trump's plan to offer buyouts to certain federal employees on Thursday. This follows a lawsuit filed Tuesday by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE).
Some 40K federal employees have reportedly accepted Trump's offer — in which they would resign with full pay and benefits through September — ahead of the Feb. 6 deadline for acceptance. This is short of the White House's target of approximately 200K resignations.
Of those who have accepted what the Office of Personnel Management called "a rare, generous opportunity" form only 2% of the 2M employees of the US government.
Pres. Donald Trump's offer to federal employees is a bold step toward a leaner, more efficient government. The administration is streamlining bureaucracy while ensuring financial stability for those who opt-in. With thousands already accepting the deal, Trump's idea has already proven successful in reducing redundancy, especially among employees working from home. A judge should not get in the way of the president's attempt to make the government more efficient.
Pres. Trump’s so-called buyout is a reckless sham, cloaked in false promises and legal ambiguity. With vague contracts, rushed deadlines, and veiled threats, he is pressuring employees to resign without guaranteeing benefits or security. This ignores the critical roles federal workers play, risking dysfunction in vital services. Even worse, it erodes trust in public service, making future recruitment more challenging. This scheme breeds chaos and legal uncertainty.
