The Spin

Democratic narrative

The birthright citizenship principle is a foundational element, perhaps the most important, of post-Civil War America, so the executive order on the matter is beyond unconstitutional. This ruling offers hope that Trump's bid to reverse history and undermine America's egalitarian tradition will fail.

Republican narrative

Trump's executive order on birthright citizenship is a much needed piece of common sense policy. When the 14th Amendment was ratified, immigrants were free to enter the country and the path to US citizenship was sensible and straightforward. That's no longer the case, as millions of non-citizens are living illegally in America and their children are entitled to US citizenship. This oversight needed to be addressed via legislation.
