The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

Chat Control's mass surveillance of private messages, even if tweaked, is a dystopian overreach that obliterates end-to-end encryption and privacy. Germany must reject this dangerous proposal to protect journalists, activists and citizens from authoritarian abuse. If it chooses to cave, it will be on the side of oppressive regimes, undermining Europe's human rights legacy. For a free digital future, Germany should stand firm against this invasive law.

Pro-establishment narrative

While privacy concerns are completely understandable, this law will be aimed explicitly at protecting children from the alarming rise of online child sexual abuse, with 36.2 million reports in 2023. Client-side scanning targets only abuse material, with detection orders as a last resort, excluding encrypted messages. Germany should support this balanced approach to safeguard kids while respecting privacy, aligning with EU values and effective crime-fighting tools.
