The Spin

Democratic narrative

The Trump administration's decision to pay out 50% of benefits will still harm millions of Americans. This crisis was created by Trump, and luckily, the courts delivered a scathing rebuke, forcing the administration to at least partially fund the program. More must be done to prevent a national nutritional crisis.

Republican narrative

Democrats voted to stop SNAP payments by voting to keep the government closed. Obama-appointed judges forced an illegal use of contingency funds designed for natural disasters, so 50% is really the best the Trump administration can do at this point in time. Democrats should vote to reopen the government, and SNAP should be audited.

Cynical narrative

Both Republican and Democratic politicians are letting families go hungry while they exchange blame and keep the government shut down. Food assistance programs should not be used as a bargaining chip; it's shameful and cruel.
