The Spin

Left narrative

There's a reason neither English nor any other language became official in the US, and that's because the country has always been a land of immigrants from a huge array of backgrounds. For 250 years, different Congresses and presidents understood this fact, never seeking to impose such a policy on their people. This is a xenophobic and dangerous move from the Trump administration.

Right narrative

Everyone intuitively understood that English was America's official language until Bill Clinton abolished assimilation requirements. Not only is it morally correct to require the population to learn America's primary language, but it's also necessary to ensure social and political cohesion. Recent waves of immigration have proven that multilingual schools don't work, so English should become the official language and common denominator before more institutions are impacted.
