The Spin

Republican narrative

This ruling rushes the timeline and creates an impossible situation for legislators to draw fair congressional districts. The court's aggressive deadlines don't allow proper deliberation for such consequential boundary decisions. This case may require legislators to file a federal lawsuit in order to retain their power to set redistricting lines as they see fit.

Democratic narrative

The Legislature's delay tactics represent a desperate attempt to ignore voter will and maintain gerrymandered districts. Republican lawmakers are trying to pick their voters instead of letting the voters choose their representatives. These stalling efforts directly oppose the principles voters established in 2018 through Proposition 4.
