Is Burton's execution unjust for a killing he didn't commit or is he responsible for the death he orchestrated?

The Spin

Democratic narrative

Executing someone who never pulled the trigger, who never even witnessed the killing, would have been a travesty of justice. It's to Governor Ivey's credit that she recognized that Burton's death sentence was fundamentally wrong and that action was needed to correct it. As a result, her decision to grant clemency was the only moral choice in this case.

Republican narrative

Despite what his supporters may claim, Burton was a criminal who organized a violent armed robbery and held a gun to a store manager's head. Ivey's decision to grant this felon clemency, therefore, is both utterly indefensible and dangerously undermining of the rule of law, along with the faith Alabama residents place in it.
