Childhood obesity rates are exploding globally. Preventable risk factors like insufficient physical activity and sugary drink consumption are driving chronic diseases, including hypertension and liver disease, in children. These data need to be taken seriously. The crisis demands immediate government intervention through sugar taxes, marketing restrictions and school food standards.
While childhood obesity is unquestionably on the rise and carries severe risks, accurately measuring it matters more than ever, and the waist-to-height ratio is far superior to the outdated BMI, which doesn't accurately capture excess fat. Switching to the waist-to-height ratio, which more accurately indicates whether someone has gained too many pounds, would prevent misdiagnosis of healthy, athletic children.
We must stop viewing obesity as merely a lifestyle disease, with a "lack of will" and nonchalance about one's "looks" as contributing factors. The abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat in one's body is a complex phenomenon caused by multiple factors. These include genes, environment, imbalanced food intake, and lack of physical activity. It's a chronic problem, and its treatment could do without the stigma attached to it.
