UK: Commons Speaker Reported Mandelson as a Flight Risk Before Arrest

Was Hoyle's decision to alert police a principled act or a flimsy justification for a high-profile arrest?

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Hoyle's decision to inform the police of Mandelson's potential departure from the U.K. was a principled move reflective of his status as Speaker of the House. With a duty to the British state, Hoyle may have potentially prevented a man infamous for scandal from escaping the grasps of justice.

Establishment-critical narrative

The suggestion that Mandelson would 'flee' to another British territory, where he would equally be open to prosecution, makes little sense. Innocent or guilty, the justification for his arrest is at best implausible and at worst deeply suspicious.
