The Trump administration is right to expand Afrikaner refugee admissions — government-sponsored race-based discrimination is a legitimate basis for refugee protection under U.S. law. South Africa's land reform policies and hostile rhetoric toward the U.S. resettlement program demonstrate a real threat environment. Raising the cap to 17,500 is a measured response to an emergency situation that Washington is legally and morally obligated to address.
The so-called Afrikaner refugee crisis is built on debunked far-right mythology — farm murders are robbery-driven crimes affecting all South Africans, and white South Africans face 8% unemployment versus 48% for Black South Africans. Thousands of white South Africans are actually returning home, undermining the persecution narrative entirely. Spending $100 million on one of the world's wealthiest minority groups while blocking refugees from war zones is indefensible.
