Russia Ukraine

Russian strikes continued across Ukraine this week, including in Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Nikopol and Donetsk.On Thursday, strikes in Vinnytsia killed at least 24, injuring 50 more, while on Saturday, 53 missiles were reportedly fired on the city of Nikopol, killing two.Meanwhile, on Tuesday and Wednesday, Ukrainian forces bombarded Nova Kakhovka in the Russian-occupied Kherson region, reportedly targeting weapons depots.This comes as Russia and Ukraine on Wednesday made progress in talks related to Ukrainian grain exports,while on Friday the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) announced the death of British captive Paul Urey, who they had accused of being a mercenary.Elsewhere, Russia on Monday issued a decree to fast-track citizenship for all Ukrainians.

Military

The US House passed an $839B military bill,France prepared a strategy to counter armed groups in the Sahel ahead of its withdrawal from Mali,China declared the US a "security risk" in the South China Sea,and a BBC report found 54 suspicious SAS killings in Afghanistan.

World Politics

Italian PM Mario Draghi offered his resignation,Sri Lanka's PM was sworn in as interim president after former Pres. Rajapaksa resigned and fled to Singapore,and the UK's Conservative leadership race saw Braverman, Hunt, and Zahawi eliminated.Meanwhile, the US and Israel signed a joint anti-Iran nuclear pledge,the UN extended its cross-border aid to Syria for six months,the Pacific Island summit started amid US-China tensions,and the US and Mexico discussed a cooperative relationship.In other news, Germany announced plans to stop buying Russian coal and oil.

US Politics

The Jan. 6 Committee held its seventh public hearing,Steve Bannon said he will testify before the Jan. 6 Committee,and the secret service reportedly deleted text messages from Jan. 5 & 6.Meanwhile, a Georgia judge ordered Sen. Lindsey Graham to testify before a special grand jury,former Trump national security advisor John Bolton claimed he helped plan foreign coups,and Manchin revealed that he won't support climate and tax provisions.

Civil Liberties & Legislation

It was revealed that Amazon's Ring gave user footage to police without consent,the WHO declared that gender is non-binary and sex isn't limited to male or female,the Dept. of Justice announced that it's creating a "reproductive rights task force,"a judge temporarily blocked Arizona's personhood law,and the Biden administration announced that doctors must offer abortion in medical emergencies.

Starbucks closed 16 stores due to crime and drug use,Twitter sued Elon Musk,Uber was sued over sexual assault claims,andLondon's Heathrow airport capped summer flights to 100K passengers per day.

US and China emissions were reported to have caused $3.7T in climate damage,a California fire threatened sequoia trees,and the Met Office issued its first-ever "red extreme warning" amid a heatwave in the UK.
