A US airstrike killed two al-Shabab members in Somalia,Iran claimed that it's able to produce a nuclear bomb,Sri Lankan military and security forces raided a protest camp,an Australian teenager died in a Syrian prison,and at least eight were killed and 20 were wounded in an attack in northern Iraq.

Russia-Ukraine

This week started with another pledge of 500M euros in military aid for Ukraine from EU diplomats on Monday,with the EU later passing its seventh round of financial sanctions against Russia.The US also announced an additional $270M of aid, including four more high mobility artillery rocket systems.Meanwhile, on Tuesday Putin met with Iranian and Turkish counterparts in Tehran to discuss Ukraine and a UN-backed negotiation to restart Ukranian grain export which was later signed by Russia and Ukraine on Friday.This comes as Russia said its military goals now extend beyond the eastern Donbas regions of Luhansk and Donetsk to include Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and other regions. Earlier in the week, US officials said they had intelligence that the Kremlin was preparing to annex additional Ukrainian territory by installing proxy officials and making the ruble the official currency. Ukraine, nevertheless, reportedly seized unspecified settlements in their Kherson Oblast counteroffensive over the weekend, according to military analysts.

World Politics

Italian PM Mario Draghi resigned,Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected the new president of Sri Lanka,Pakistan's former PM called for an early vote after his by-election victory,and the UK Conservative leadership race saw Tugendhat and Badenoch knocked outfollowed by the elimination of Mordaunt.Meanwhile, the EU launched membership talks with Albania and North Macedonia, andFrance and the UAE signed an energy cooperation deal.In other news, the UN's aviation agency accused Belarusian officials of being involved in a plane bomb hoax,China warned of "forceful measures" if Pelosi visits Taiwan,US lawmakers denounced Israel's blacklisting of Palestinian NGOs,and Syrian refugees living in Turkey expressed fear over a "voluntary return" plan.

US Politics

The Senate introduced bipartisan reforms to the Electoral Count Act,Biden signed an executive order on wrongful detentions abroadand outlined the details of a $37B Safer America Plan,the Jan. 6 Committee held its eighth public hearing,and Steve Bannon was found guilty of contempt of Congress.Meanwhile, a judge ruled that Rudy Giuliani must testify in the Trump election probe,Mike Pence broke with Trump and endorsed Karrin Robson for Arizona's governor,a Trump-backed candidate won the Maryland GOP governor nomination,and Trump was accused of trying to use census citizenship for political gain.In other news, Fauci announced plans to step down by the end of 2024.

Democrat representatives protesting abortion rights were arrested outside SCOTUS,a West Virginia judge blocked an abortion ban,the US House passed a same-sex marriage billand legislation to protect access to contraception, andUPenn nominated trans swimmer Lia Thomas as NCAA's "Woman of the Year..

Business

Amazon sued 10K Facebook group admins over fake reviews,and bought the virtual healthcare provider One Medical.Meanwhile, China fined Didi $1.2B for breaking cybersecurity laws, and the Port of Oakland in the US was shut down by trucker protests.

Crime & Justice

The Texas House Committee released a report on the Uvalde shooting,murder charges against a Bodega clerk were dropped,a jury convicted a man of killing a retired St. Louis police captain during a BLM protests,charges were dropped against Colbert staffers who were arrested in the Capitol,and four men were indicted in the Texas migrant smuggling deaths.Meanwhile, a GOP candidate for NY governor was attacked at a campaign event,Mexico arrested a notorious drug lord,Singapore carried out its fifth execution since March,an Indian journalist was released on bail,and an Ecuadorian prison riot killed at least 12 people.In other news, the UK's BBC News paid damages to a former royal nanny.
