The UN accused Israel of committing sexual violence against Palestinians in Gaza,US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to Qatar for another round of Gaza negotiations,and Hamas said it would release an Israeli-American hostage on the condition that talks for the second phase of the Gaza cease-fire begin.This comes as Israel launched strikes in Gaza's Beit Lahiya,Israel and Lebanon agreed to begin talks on border disagreements,and the Syrian Democratic Forces agreed to integrate with the Damascus government.Meanwhile, the US resumed aid to Ukraine as Kyiv agreed to a 30-day cease-fire —a deal that Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed openness to —the EU renewed its sanctions against Moscow,and Kyiv launched hundreds of drones into Russia.Elsewhere, Poland sought nuclear weapons from the US,as it announced plans to offer military training to 100K volunteers in 2027,Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed on a peace deal to resolve their conflict over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region,Angola prepared to host peace talks between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the anti-government March 23 Movement,and authorities freed dozens of hostagesafter militants hijacked a train in Pakistan.

World Politics

Mark Carney was sworn in as Canada's new prime minister,Greenland's opposition Demokraatit Party won an unexpected victory in the parliamentary election,Portugal's government lost a no-confidence vote,and former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon ruled out the possibility of a re-election campaign.This comes as Syria's Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa signed a new constitution,China hosted high-level talks on Iran's nuclear program,dozens were arrested amid protests against Argentina's pension cuts,and Colombia's Gustavo Petro called for a referendum on stalled health and labor reforms.Meanwhile, the EU unveiled a $28B tariff package against US importsafter Donald Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum took effect,the US president considered a 200% tariff on EU alcohol,the UK's Keir Starmer decided not to rule out imposing duties on the US,and Washington and Ottawa agreed to renegotiate the USMCA trade agreement.In other news, former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili was sentenced to an additional nine years in an embezzlement case,Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te announced over a dozen legal and economic measures against China,Starmer announced plans to bring NHS England under government control,and UK National Security Advisor Jonathan Powell declined to appear before a national security committee.

US Politics

Congress passed a stopgap funding bill —which was backed by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumerafter he initially opposed it —and Donald Trump called for the ouster of Rep. Thomas Massie over his opposition to the legislation.This comes as the White House withdrew its nominee to lead the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,a judge ordered the reinstatement of thousands of fired federal workers,as the Education Department announced plans to halve its workforce, Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency was required to reveal its staff make-up and operational data,and the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to rule on its effort to end birthright citizenship.In other news, Musk visited the National Security Agency's headquarters,the US Agency for International Development instructed staff to shred classified documents and personal files,and the Department of Agriculture canceled $1B in funding to schools and food banks,including $30M to the University of Maine.Meanwhile, former US Rep.
