OpenAI, Condé Nast Ink Multi-Year Content Deal

Photo: Unsplash

The Facts

  • Sam Altman-led OpenAI on Tuesday announced a deal with Condé Nast to display content from its brands, such as The New Yorker and Vanity Fair, on ChatGPT and SearchGPT prototype.

  • While the deal's financial terms haven't been disclosed, OpenAI said the partnership aims to give its users "fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources."

The Spin

Narrative A

The fusion of AI and journalism heralds a new era of media innovation. It could revolutionize content creation, distribution, and monetization. Combining cutting-edge technologies with rich, curated content could transform how we consume and interact with news and stories, involving unprecedented personalization, efficiency, and engagement. It could also address revenue generation and content discovery challenges and reshape the global media landscape.

Narrative B

The marriage of AI and journalism poses a potential threat to the integrity of news and information. AI-generated content lacks crucial human elements — context, ethics, and intuition. It can't grasp cultural nuances or make moral judgments, potentially leading to biased, inaccurate, or harmful reporting. AI's inability to understand complex human stories may result in shallow, misguided analyses. Moreover, if trained on biased data, AI could perpetuate and amplify societal prejudices.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that the New York Times will publish an article in 2027 that it claims or acknowledges is 100% written by AI, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Ukrainian MPs Vote to Ban Moscow-Linked Churches

The Facts

  • Ukraine's parliament, by a margin of 265 votes to 29, passed a law banning religious groups affiliated to the Russian Orthodox Church on Tuesday — a move seen as targeting the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) that was historically linked to Moscow.

  • Within a month of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the UOC voted to separate itself from the Moscow Patriarchate. However, Ukrainian leaders have since accused it of aiding and abetting Russia's war effort by spreading propaganda and housing Russian spies.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Despite claims that is has split from Moscow, the UOC clergy have blessed Russian tanks and told Ukrainian parishioners to welcome Russia's invasion of the country. This is a historic move that will deprive the Kremlin of one of its most important spy networks.

Establishment-critical narrative

Immediately after the Russian invasion, the UOC moved to separate itself from the Moscow Patriarchate. This is a cynical move that tramples on religious freedoms, and one that needs to be reversed if Ukraine still wants to be considered a bastion of liberty against Russian aggression.

Nerd narrative

There's a 20% chance that Ukraine will join the EU before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Philippines: Ex-Mayor Accused of Spying for China Flees

Photo: Unsplash

The Facts

  • In the Philippines, Senator Risa Hontiveros said on Monday that Alice Guo, Bamban's former mayor accused of being a PRC spy, may have fled the southeast Asian nation last month.

  • As evidence, Hontiveros displayed before the Philippines Senate an immigration entry card that Guo allegedly used to arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on July 18.

The Spin

Narrative A

The Alice Guo case has exposed significant flaws in the Philippines' systems for vetting public officeholders. Guo's ability to run for mayor despite dubious records — including questionable citizenship and a potential alias — highlights the "institutional decay" in the government. The situation reveals how weak coordination among agencies and loopholes in the electoral system can be exploited, potentially allowing foreign influence to infiltrate the country's political landscape. This calls for systemic reforms.

Narrative B

Guo's life has been upended by growing paranoia in the Philippines about supposed PRC influence. She has faced undue intense scrutiny and public ridicule. Guo's inability to accurately answer questions about her background during a Senate hearing only fueled suspicions, leading to accusations of being an "asset" for Beijing. This fear-driven narrative has overshadowed her defense, leaving her struggling to clear her name in the backdrop of simmering political tension between Manila and Beijing.

Nerd narrative

There's a 20% chance that an armed conflict between the Philippines and the PRC will cause at least 100 deaths before 2050, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

At Least Three Killed in Bosnia School Shooting

The Facts

  • Officers have reported that a janitor opened fire with an automatic weapon at the Sanski Most Gymnasium — a secondary school in the northwest of Bosnia and Herzegovina — on Wednesday, killing at least three, including the school dean, secretary, and an English instructor.

  • The gun used in the attack, which took place around 10 am local time, has been described as a military-grade automatic weapon. The suspect is currently being treated in a hospital near Banja Luka, having been left in serious condition due to self-inflicted injuries.

The Spin

Narrative A

The shooting at the secondary school in Sanski Most is a tragic call to action to address the plethora of illegal weapons that have flooded the Balkans since the wars in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. The perpetrator behind this abhorrent act — the types of which have been relatively rare in the West Balkans so far — must also be held accountable to the full extent of the law.

Narrative B

While details on this incident have yet to be confirmed, violent occurrences such as this shine a spotlight on how, decades later, post-war horrors still grip the region. There's no excuse for the perpetrator's horrific crime, but it's undeniable that authorities must address the dearth of resources for veterans. It's time this changes.

Nerd narrative

There is a 4% chance more than 500 combatants will die as a result of an armed conflict in the Balkans by 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

RFK Jr. May Drop Out of Race and Endorse Trump, Running Mate Says

The Facts

  • In an interview posted Monday, the running mate of independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Nicole Shanahan, said that Kennedy is considering dropping out of the race in order to "join forces with Donald Trump." Kennedy will reportedly make an address Friday regarding his political future.

  • Shanahan said that they are also mulling staying in the race and forming a "new party," but that they may "draw more votes from Trump" and increase the odds of Democrat Kamala Harris winning the election. Shanahan blamed the Democratic Party for turning their ticket "into a spoiler."

The Spin

Republican narrative

This is heartening news for Republicans, as the RFK Jr. campaign wakes up to the fact that the Democratic Party is the biggest threat to freedom, as they try mercilessly to shut down the Kennedy-Shanahan campaign. The Kennedy-Shanahan ticket deserves plaudits for acknowledging that a Harris presidency would be a disaster and that Trump would welcome independent-minded voters into the fold.

Democratic narrative

The mask is finally off on the Kennedy campaign, as they finally admit that they are far from independent or authentically populist and instead seek to aid the Republicans in November. Kennedy has ceaselessly attempted to court the support of the Trump campaign, as his running mate also says that Trump would be better for the country than Harris. The third-party guise is fooling no one, as Kennedy inches closer to a Trump endorsement and potential future Trump-aligned role.

Narrative C

Kennedy's potential dropout doesn't speak to the weakness of his campaign but to its strength. The fact that an independent, grass-roots movement has brought the Democrats and Republicans to the table to vie for his support goes to show the power that a third party can wield. The Kennedy campaign is about solutions, not partisanship, and they will work with whoever will commit to making the country better.

Nerd narrative

There is a 96% chance that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will suspend his presidential campaign by Oct. 2022, 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Report: Gaza Cease-fire Negotiations May Again Collapse

The Facts

  • A Politico report released on Tuesday, citing anonymous US and Israeli officials, alleged that Gaza cease-fire negotiations may collapse once again. The US officials added that "if we don’t get the deal there’s a chance that Iran attacks and this escalates into a full blown confrontation." Negotiations are continuing in Cairo.

  • In Gaza, fighting continued across the strip. Israeli airstrikes were reported near Khan Younis and Gaza City, with the military issuing new evacuation orders for some areas of Deir Al-Balah in central Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians have sought refuge.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

With the clock ticking, the US and its allies are confident that after some tough negotiating, a deal between Israel and Hamas can be reached. A guaranteed end to the war will ensure increased humanitarian aid to the besieged enclave, the release of Israeli hostages, and create a better "day after" in Gaza without Hamas in power. The US will continue to work toward closing the gaps and ensuring that peace and stability can be restored to the region.

Pro-Israel narrative

Though Israel will do what it must to free those taken hostage in Gaza, it cannot rush into a deal that creates a lifeline for Hamas. Israel faces an entire network of Iranian-back terror and must act wisely to gain as much as it can in negotiations with Hamas while avoiding full-scale regional escalation.

Pro-Palestine narrative

Israel's aggressive posture only demonstrates that it is a rogue state that would rather light the region on fire than stop its genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. Netanyahu continues to engage in provocative acts because he has failed to achieve his political and military objectives. While Netanyahu extends the war to ensure his political survival, the US continues to support Israel with a blank check and obfuscate its role in the carnage.

Harris, Democrats Took Fundraising Lead in July

The Facts

  • US Vice President Kamala Harris' main presidential campaign fundraising group revealed in federal disclosures on Tuesday that it raised $204M last month, while former Pres. Donald Trump's campaign disclosed $48M in July fundraising to the Federal Election Commission.

  • Previously, Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, revealed $310M in combined July fundraising between her campaign and the party's main fundraising group. Trump, the Republican nominee, said its campaign fundraising combined with the party's fundraising totaled $138M last month.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

Harris' unprecedented fundraising haul is another sign of how much her move to the top of the Democratic ticket has reinvigorated the party and its donors. Biden clearly salvaged this race for his party by stepping aside. Maybe the only thing Trump can hope for is another criminal conviction to motivate his donors again.

Republican narrative

If Harris is so proud of her fundraising prowess, she should follow the precedent of every other Democratic presidential nominee of the modern era and reveal the identities of her biggest contributors. Many of them are likely to play a role in her administration, so Americans deserve to know what they would be getting. It's concerning that transparency in campaigns is vanishing.

Nerd narrative

There's a 55% chance that Harris will be elected US president in 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

US Government Overreported Yearly Job Gains by 800K

The Facts

  • According to a new Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report, the US economy produced 818K fewer non-farm jobs from March 2023 to March 2024 than previously reported by the Labor Department. The BLS said this -0.5% year-over-year growth rate revision is more than the typical -0.1%.

  • The revision, which is the largest since 2009, shows an increase of 2.1M jobs over that period, down from 2.9M previously reported. This brings the average monthly job growth down from over 240K to somewhere between 170K and 180K over that time span.

The Spin

Republican narrative

This proves that Biden and the Democrats have been gaslighting the country for a year. As regular Americans felt the pain of declining wages and increased inflation, Biden unabashedly argued that at least job growth was positive. This also shows that while American citizens were forced into unemployment and excluded from pay raises, illegal immigrants were finding jobs in droves, thus pushing wages down even further.

Democratic narrative

While this report is a bit larger than usual, downward job growth revisions happen every year, including in 2019, when they were revised down by 489K. These latest numbers may have also been affected by the economic impacts of Hurricane Beryl last month in the large state of Texas. This report aside, the goal of labor market cooling to quell inflation is continuing as predicted, with unemployment rising a bit while layoffs remain low.

Nerd narrative

There's a 25% chance that a recession will begin in the US in 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Afghanistan: Taliban Denies Entry to UN Rights Expert

The Facts

  • UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan Richard Bennett has been barred from entering the country for allegedly spreading "propaganda" against the Taliban administration.

  • He reported in June that Afghan women and girls were subject to a treatment akin to "gender apartheid," noting "the systemic oppression" could amount to a crime against humanity.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

The Taliban banning Bennett from visiting Afghanistan shows the regime's crackdown on human rights is ongoing. Taliban's sweeping curbs on women and girls' access to education, employment, public places, salons, and gyms highlight their gender-based persecution. The international community must insist on reversing the institutionalized and systematic repression against millions of Afghans.

Establishment-critical narrative

The Taliban views and respects women's rights according to Islamic law and Afghan customs. Bennett misrepresented the ground realities, published biased reports, exaggerated minor issues, and propagated hatred toward the Afghans to undermine the government's credibility on the global stage. The West failed the people of Afghanistan, but it will not be allowed to meddle with the country's internal matters and rattle it again.

Nerd narrative

There's a 10% chance that the US will recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
