'Second Mini Moon' to Temporarily Orbit Earth

Photo: Unsplash

The Facts

  • 2024 PT5, a 33-foot-long asteroid discovered in August, is reportedly set to make a “horseshoe path” around Earth, turning into its second moon from Sept. 29 to Nov. 25.

  • Temporarily captured by Earth's gravity, 2024 PT5 reportedly belongs to the Arjuna asteroid belt and won't be visible to most stargazers given its small size.

The Spin

Narrative A

Asteroid 2024 PT5 is stirring excitement in the scientific community as it offers a rare chance to examine an asteroid at close range. While too small for casual stargazers to spot, it's well within reach of professional equipment. Despite its elusiveness to the naked eye, 2024 PT5 represents a captivating cosmic phenomenon, pushing the boundaries of our understanding and sparking curiosity about the mysteries that lurk in our celestial neighborhood.

Narrative B

While Asteroid 2024 PT5 has captured attention, it's worth noting that Earth's mini-moon phenomenon is neither new nor uncommon. Our planet regularly attracts temporary satellites, with new ones appearing almost monthly. The 2020 CD3 discovery highlighted this recurring event. With improved technology, we are likely to detect these transient visitors more frequently. They're part of an ongoing celestial ballet.

Narrative C

Asteroid 2024 PT5 reminds us of an even more fascinating chapter in Earth's cosmic history an original second moon. Astronomers theorize that billions of years ago, Earth had two moons, born from the same cataclysmic collision that created our current satellite. While this remains speculative, it highlights the dynamic nature of our cosmic galaxy.

Nerd narrative

There is a 4% chance that any asteroid or comet will be mined in space for commercial purposes before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Jailed Cuban Dissident Leader Wins Annual Human Rights Award

The Facts

  • The Norway-based Rafto Foundation for Human Rights announced on Thursday that its annual prize has been awarded to the imprisoned Cuban activist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara for his "fearless opposition to authoritarianism through art."

  • The 36-year-old artist is a prominent member of the San Isidro Movement, an artists' collective established in 2018 to protest a decree requiring artists to obtain advance permissions for performances and that was behind protests in 2021.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Otero Alcántara has organized an artists' collective to fight for freedom against Cuba's Soviet-style security state even if that meant being defamed and put behind bars. He should long have been released from prison, and hopefully, this well-deserved award will put a spotlight on his plight.

Establishment-critical narrative

Otero Alcántara has never been an artist as he pretends to be, but rather a problematic figure who used art to unashamedly disrespect the national flag. Given that he has closely worked with US-backed entities seeking to destabilize progressive countries, it's no surprise that a Western organization awarded him a prize this week.

Nerd narrative

There's a 5% chance that Cuba will experience a civil war before 2036, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

UK: More Women Accuse Ex-Harrods Owner of Sexual Assault

The Facts

  • Another woman has accused the late former owner of British department store Harrods, Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed, of sexually assaulting her when she was 21. She said he "put his hands on [her] breast" at his London apartment in 2007.

  • Al Fayed, whose alleged decades-long abuse was revealed in a recent BBC documentary, is now accused of raping five women and sexually assaulting at least 15 others at his properties in London, Saint-Tropez, and Abu Dhabi, and the former Duke of Windsor's home in Paris.

The Spin

Narrative A

Mohamed Al Fayed was a monster on par with Jimmy Savile, Harvey Weinstein, and Jeffrey Epstein. His money and power, particularly as the owner of the department store, allowed him to build a dangerously toxic work environment where he could abuse women with impunity. It's tragic that due to this power, his victims only felt capable of speaking up after his death.

Narrative B

The case of Al Fayed goes far beyond a toxic work environment and all the way to the top of the British government and the Royal Family. It's no wonder that the man who bought off members of parliament and had a relationship with the former Duke of Windsor was never prosecuted. Women were likely kept quiet not just by their powerful boss but by the entire upper echelon of British society.

Report: US Remains Unconvinced on Ukraine's Possible Use of Long-Range Weapons in Russia

The Facts

  • The US, under the administration of Pres. Joe Biden, remains unconvinced that it should grant Ukraine authority to use long-range Western weapons to strike deep into Russian territory, according to US officials who spoke to the Associated Press this week.

  • As Biden and Ukrainian Pres. Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepare to meet next week, US officials said they have asked Ukraine to elaborate on how such weapons — if provided — would be used in line with Kyiv's war objectives.

The Spin

Pro-Ukraine narrative

Because of current restrictions on long-range weapons, Russia simply moves its weapons out of range, hampering Ukraine's ability to put any pressure on its military. Ukraine has waited too long to receive these permissions.

Pro-Russia narrative

Should NATO countries lift restrictions and allow their long-range weapons to strike Russia, Moscow will have no choice but to see this as NATO's direct involvement in the war and respond accordingly. This would be a fundamental escalation of the conflict — the West needs to tread carefully.

Nerd narrative

There is a 20% chance that Russia will have significantly expanded its controlled territory in Ukraine on Jan. 1, 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

North Carolina: GOP Governor Candidate Denies Controversial Comments

The Facts

  • A Thursday report by CNN claimed that North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the Republican nominee for governor in that state, between the years of 2008 and 2012 made a series of controversial comments, including calling himself a "black NAZI," on a pornographic website.

  • The comments were connected to Robinson by CNN using biographical details and matching a shared email address between him and the username, "minisoldr." Robinson also allegedly expressed a fondness for transgender pornography and a desire to see the return of slavery to the US.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

Despite Robinson's long history of racist, anti-Semitic, and anti-transgender comments, Robinson has maintained the support of the Republican Party in North Carolina and beyond. So now the GOP is stuck with someone whose campaign claims to be built on religious conservatism but is awash in extreme and hypocritical scandals. This bodes well for the Democrats in North Carolina come November.

Republican narrative

Democrats and their allies who make up most of the mainstream media may want to convict Robinson without a proper investigation into this matter, but CNN has been less than trustworthy with its past reporting — especially when it comes to hoaxes related to conservative figures. This could be high-tech misinformation planted by Robinson's opponent to distract from the issues.

Nerd narrative

There's a 56% chance that Donald Trump will win North Carolina in the 2024 presidential election, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Brazil Fines X, Starlink Over Brief X Restoration

The Facts

  • Brazilian Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes on Thursday imposed a $920K daily fine on two of Elon Musk's companies, social media platform X, formerly Twitter, and satellite internet company Starlink, due to a brief restoration of X in the country.

  • X had been banned in Brazil by de Moraes over what he described as the spread of misinformation and hate speech, as well as the company's previous refusal to pay over $3M in fines and appoint a legal representative in the country.

The Spin

Narrative A

Musk has been known for removing content in some countries while allowing hate speech to flourish in others. It's understandable for a sovereign government to request the removal of certain content. When you add Starlink into the mix, which is directly tied to military operations, the government is also justified in not wanting Musk to have leverage over Brazilian national security affairs.

Narrative B

Musk aspires to the challenge of free speech absolutism, and he's particularly effective in facilitating positive change in countries that are supposedly democratic. On the flip side, Judge de Moraes, a man whose history is checkered, is actually causing democratic backsliding. Thankfully, de Moraes has no power over Starlink satellites, which will hopefully soon provide uncensored internet to all Brazilians.

Nerd narrative

There is a 50% chance that Alexandre de Moraes will cease to be a minister of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil before 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Israel Targets Hezbollah Official in Beirut

The Facts

  • The Israeli military said it killed Hezbollah operations commander Ibrahim Aqil in a strike on Friday that reportedly killed at least nine and injured 59. Hezbollah hasn't confirmed Aqil's death.

  • Lebanon’s National News Agency said that at least five of those killed were children. Videos from the scene of the attack show rubble and burned-out cars strewn across a busy street in Haret Hreik in Beirut's southern suburbs. A Lebanese official told Reuters the strike occurred near a Hezbollah facility.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Though attacks in Lebanon have been precise, any escalation in the region is counterproductive to cease-fire negotiations and the freeing of Israeli hostages. Israel has a right to defend itself from terrorist threats, but it is paramount that the country's leadership prioritizes de-escalation. The US was not aware of any of the attacks this week and will continue to work with mediators to reach a deal.

Pro-Israel narrative

Hezbollah is paying the price for its daily terror attacks on northern Israel. Hezbollah has had several opportunities to make a deal with Israel to de-escalate tensions, yet the group seemingly believed it could continue its attacks on Israel without consequence. Israel is still open to a diplomatic solution, but it is also more than ready to confront Hezbollah.

Pro-Palestine narrative

Israel continues to isolate itself internationally due to its genocidal campaign in Gaza and its insidious aggression against Lebanon. As Israeli attacks kill thousands, the US continues to shield Israel from accountability and ensure that it is armed to the teeth. This war will only end when the US ends its support for Israel's genocidal ambitions in Gaza and the wider region.

Narrative D

The attacks against Lebanon are a clear example of Israeli terrorism in the region and its disregard for human life. Hezbollah opened a support front with Israel to stand in solidarity with Gaza, which has faced a genocidal Israeli campaign. Its attacks will end when Israel withdraws from Gaza. Nonetheless, Hezbollah is ready and able to defend Lebanon from Israeli aggression.

House Passes Bill Increasing Protection for Presidential, VP Candidates

The Facts

  • The US House on Friday voted 405-0 for a bill requiring the Secret Service to devote as many resources to protecting major-party presidential candidates as they use to protect presidents and vice presidents.

  • The bipartisan bill, which was introduced by House members from New York and New Jersey, is separate from a bill being worked on to increase the Secret Service's funding before an Oct. 1 deadline.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

It's reassuring that the Republican-led House was able to come together to codify the raised standards of security Pres. Joe Biden already implemented with the Secret Service. Trump and Harris are each being protected to the best of the Secret Services' ability. Next, the Secret Service needs more funding to make sure it can do the best job possible. That means it's up to the GOP leaders in the House to get a funding bill passed.

Republican narrative

Before the Secret Service receives more funding, it must show it's capable of doing its job, including keeping members of Congress in the loop. But so far, the Secret Service has joined the FBI in slow-walking the investigation into the first assassination attempt on Trump. Either this is incompetence, or the agency is trying to hide something from Congress. Transparency must come before additional funds are allocated.

Nerd narrative

There's a 28% chance that the next assassination of a sitting US president will occur after Jan. 1, 2100, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Georgia Election Board Requires Hand Counting of Ballots

The Facts

  • The Georgia state election board voted 3-2 Friday to require that all ballots in the upcoming November election be hand-counted at every polling location across the state.

  • The new rule, which comes less than 50 days before the Nov. 5 election, means that ballots will be counted by both machines and poll workers.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

There is absolutely zero reason to require hand-counted ballots. Studies show that due to human nature and our inability to do tedious tasks for too long, hand counts result in a 25% mistake rate. They also show that it would require immense personnel resources and weeks of counting just to do 100K ballots, let alone the millions that will be cast in Georgia. This is a dangerous move by Trump allies to potentially throw the Georgia election process into chaos and provide a bad faith pretext for not certifying the results.

Pro-Trump narrative

The American people have become very skeptical of their elections, which is why they want further assurances that their ballots are counted properly. People already assume that other precious documents, such as money at the bank, are checked and re-checked by human beings, so it shouldn't be too much to ask regarding the sacred right to vote. And when it comes to potential chaos after Election Day, the true threat is a large-scale, left-wing infrastructure ready to conduct lawfare at a moment's notice.

Nerd narrative

There's a 51% that Donald Trump will win the battleground state of Georgia in the 2024 presidential election according to the Metaculus prediction community.
