Venezuela: Opposition Leader Says He was "Forced" to Admit Election Defeat
Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González claimed on Wednesday that he had been subjected to "coercion, blackmail, and pressure" to sign a letter admitting defeat in the disputed July election.
Gonzales, now in exile in Spain, said Pres. Nicolas Maduro's allies told him to sign the letter if he wanted to leave Venezuela "or [he] would face consequences."
Pro-establishment narrative
Nicolás Maduro is clinging on to power in Venezuela despite widespread skepticism over the results. Evident help from a government-controlled electoral council amid allegations of voter suppression and irregularities, such as closing borders and blocking vote tallies, have rightly fueled international criticism. Many countries, including the US and EU, have rejected the results, and Venezuela should respond to international pressure for a transparent vote count.
Establishment-critical narrative
International election observers have found Venezuela’s recent election transparent and credible. Despite winning by a slim margin, a careful review confirmed Nicolás Maduro's victory. The refusal to recognize this result undermines Venezuelan democracy and stability, fueling unrest. Acknowledging this legitimate outcome would show respect for the will of the Venezuelan people.

UN Resolution Asks Israel to End 'Unlawful Presence' in Palestine
The UN General Assembly passed a non-binding resolution on Wednesday calling for Israel to "end without delay its unlawful presence" in Palestinian areas within 12 months.
There were 124 votes in favor and 14 votes against the measure, along with 43 abstentions. Among those in opposition were Israel itself and its closest ally, the US.
Pro-Palestine narrative
The international community must hold Israel accountable for its occupation of Palestinian territories, and an arms embargo will prove crucial to safeguard global legal standards and cease humanitarian crises. It's time for nations to take decisive steps against Israel to protect Palestinian lives and uphold international law.
Pro-Israel narrative
UN officials have in the past virtually justified Hamas' terrorism by pointing to an alleged "suffocating occupation" in a blatant show of a systemic bias against Israel. Influenced by nations like Russia, China, and some Muslim-majority states, the UN keeps portraying Israel as an oppressor while downplaying atrocities committed by groups like Hamas.
Nerd narrative
There is a 1% chance that any two countries out of the US, UK, Germany, Canada, France, or Australia will curtail diplomatic ties with Israel before 2025, citing Israel’s military actions in Gaza, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Hong Kong: Man Jailed for Wearing 'Seditious' T-Shirt
Hong Kong resident Chu Kai-pong, 27, has been handed a 14-month prison sentence for wearing a t-shirt and a mask sporting protest slogans deemed seditious by the city's court.
Chu was detained on June 12 donning a t-shirt with the protest slogan "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times" and a mask with "FDNOL" — an abbreviation for another protest slogan, "Five demands, not one less" — written on it.
Pro-China narrative
Chu had planned to incite ordinary citizens to use illegal means to challenge the country's fundamental system, revive the idea of the unrest, and cause a significant risk to social order. He knew the slogans called for the separation of Hong Kong from China and the city's return to British rule. The legal system had to intervene to protect society from falling into chaos again.
Anti-China narrative
Chu's conviction is a blatant attack on the right to freedom of expression and highlights the sheer malice of Hong Kong's new national security law — passed by the PRC to stifle free speech and curb dissent further. The city must reverse this sentencing and consider repealing the law that erodes freedoms and silences critics under the pretext of protecting national security.

There's a 50% chance that Hong Kong will stop being a Special Administrative Region of China by January 2047, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Canada: Inquiry Finds PRC Influence Didn't Violate Election Law
An inquiry conducted by the Commissioner of Canada Elections (CCE) has found that while China did allegedly attempt to sway the votes of Chinese Canadians against the Conservative Party in 2021, its actions did not break election laws.
The inquiry was particularly focused on the re-election campaign of former Conservative member of parliament Kenny Chiu, who was elected in British Columbia's Steveston-Richmond East district in 2019 but lost in 2021.
Left narrative
This report is congruent with the broader relationship between Canada and China. For example, while Ottawa has placed certain economic sanctions on Beijing, it hasn't damaged the overall positive economic partnership between the two nations. The same goes for these inquiries, which are popular among the Canadian people and are being conducted with the sole aim of finding the truth.
Right narrative
The conclusion of this inquiry goes against every piece of evidence. Canadian intelligence agencies, who are aligned with the ruling Liberal Party, were told about these attacks against their political opponents years ago by US intelligence agencies. It wasn't until court documents were unsealed in America that Canadians were able to see what their government was hiding from them.
Pro-China narrative
Canada's bad faith focusing on baseless allegations of supposed PRC interference in its elections harms relations with Beijing. This shows an overreliance on Canada's dependence on US hegemony. While there's still a firm foundation of many issues to collaborate on between Canada and China, these domestic political stunts don't help bilateral relations.

US Election: 'Uncommitted' Group Declines to Endorse
In a statement released Thursday, the pro-Palestine Uncommitted National Movement said it can't endorse Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, but it's also against Republican former Pres. Donald Trump winning the presidency because of his "plans to accelerate the killing in Gaza."
The group cited Harris' "unwillingness to shift on unconditional weapons policy" or support "upholding existing US and international human rights law" as reasons it can't endorse her. It also said Harris didn't respond to its request to meet with Palestinian-American families who've been affected by the conflict.
Progressive narrative
Harris has ignored this group as Vice President and as the Democratic nominee. Uncommitted even sent a letter to Harris reiterating its foreign policy demands. Now that she's blatantly ignored Uncommitted, she's likely to lose hundreds of thousands of votes in the most important states, possibly costing her the entire election.
Democratic narrative
Harris' campaign hasn't been perfect, but there's no questioning the foreign policy experience she's gained in the Biden administration. She knows how to strengthen alliances to counter America's enemies and she understands that America's diversity is the country's greatest economic asset and what its enemies fear most. Uncommitted should recognize her commitment to resolving the conflict in Gaza.
Republican narrative
Harris can't seem to please anyone on the Gaza issue. She can't convince far-left Democrats she's supportive enough of Palestinians, but the Biden administration hasn't shown enough loyalty to Israel. The US deserves a president who's steadfast in their convictions and sticks by America's allies.

Hezbollah: Attacks Will End When Gaza War Ends
After pagers and hand-held radios used by Hezbollah members exploded across Lebanon and Syria on Tuesday and Wednesday, the group's leader Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech on Thursday that the only way for Israel to return displaced civilians to their homes in the north is to end its campaign in Gaza.
Nasrallah admitted that the attacks — which killed over 30 people and wounded thousands — were a "painful blow" but vowed to keep fighting. Israeli jets flew low over Beirut and broke the sound barrier while Nasrallah was delivering the speech.
Pro-establishment narrative
Though the pager attack was a precise operation, any escalation in the region is counterproductive to cease-fire negotiations and the freeing of Israeli hostages. Israel has a right to defend itself from terrorist threats, but it's paramount that the country's leadership prioritizes de-escalation. The US was not aware of the pager attack and will continue to work with mediators to reach a deal.
Pro-Israel narrative
Though Israel has not taken credit for this well-planned operation, it should demonstrate to Hezbollah and its patrons in Tehran that it cannot withstand an Israeli assault. The group's highly-trained and well-equipped ranks have been thrown into chaos, and its vulnerability has never been so clear. Hezbollah should end its terrorist attacks on Israel if it seeks to protect Lebanon.
Pro-Palestine narrative
Israel continues to isolate itself internationally due to its genocidal campaign in Gaza and its insidious aggression against Lebanon. As Israeli attacks kill thousands, the US continues to shield Israel from accountability and ensure that it is armed to the teeth. This war will only end when the US ends its support for Israel's genocidal ambitions in Gaza and the wider region.
Narrative D
This attack against Lebanon is a clear example of Israeli terrorism in the region and its disregard for human life. Both Lebanese authorities and Hezbollah will investigate the security failures that led to this attack, and a response is guaranteed. Hezbollah is ready and able to defend Lebanon from Israeli aggression.
Nerd narrative
There's a 94% chance that there will be 1000 or more deaths due to armed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah before 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Teamsters Won't Endorse in 2024 Presidential Race
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, one of the largest labor unions in the US with 1.3M members, Wednesday announced it will not be endorsing anyone for the 2024 presidential election.
In addition, the Teamsters released a national electronic poll showing that its rank-and-file members favor former Pres. Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, 59.6% to 34%.
Republican narrative
This is a de facto endorsement for Trump and a disaster for Harris. The Teamsters' polling showed loud and clear that the rank-and-file want their union to endorse Trump because the former president is the only candidate who will stand up and fight for them. O'Brien can ignore the will of his members, but Trump won't forget them.
Democratic narrative
Harris and Pres. Joe Biden have formed the most pro-union administration in US history, while Trump's anti-labor policies are well-known. Still, O'Brien is hedging his bets. Embarrassingly for him, many local and state affiliates have voiced their support for Harris.
Nerd narrative
There's a 55% chance that Kamala Harris will be elected US president in 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
House Votes Against Speaker Johnson's Govt Spending Bill
By a vote of 220-202, the US House voted against House Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-La) proposed six-month federal government funding bill. Of the 220 who voted against, most were Democrats, though 14 Republicans joined them and two Republicans voted present.
The temporary funding bill, known as a stopgap bill, is valued at $1.6T and includes a provision called the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would implement new proof-of-citizenship requirements for voter registration.
Republican narrative
While some Republicans have differing opinions on certain things, the party is very much in agreement on the issue of election security. The real problem is that Senate Democrats haven't brought appropriations bills to the floor, which, alongside the House Democrats refusing to ban illegal immigrants from voting, leaves the government stuck in limbo.
Democratic narrative
Since Republicans know that noncitizens don't actually vote, what other reason could they have for pushing this? One of the most horrific possibilities is that if the passport and/or birth certificate ID rules were imposed, millions of women who don't have a passport and whose maiden name doesn't match their married name could be banned from voting. These machinations are quite possibly leading to a government shutdown.
Nerd narrative
There's a 45% chance that Republicans will win control of the US House of Representatives in 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
