Report: 2025 Was Third Warmest Year on Record
EU scientists said Wednesday that the planet recorded its third-hottest year in 2025, with global temperatures averaging 1.47°C above pre-industrial levels. According to their monitoring, the last 11 years have been the warmest on record, while 2024 remained the hottest year and 2023 was in second place.
The data published by Copernicus, the European Union’s climate change monitoring service, found that global temperatures exceeded 1.5°C relative to pre-industrial levels for the first time. on average over a three-year period, from 2023 to 2025.
The Antarctic experienced its warmest year on record, while the Arctic saw its second-hottest year in 2025. Sea ice at both poles was at record lows, and approximately 770 million people reportedly experienced record-warm annual conditions in their regions.
Climate-skeptic narrative
Climate forecasting has systematically overpredicted warming for three decades while demanding massive economic sacrifices that kill people through energy scarcity and higher costs. The entire agenda functions as a money laundering scheme, replacing fossil fuel profits with government-subsidized renewable investments that enrich corporations while ignoring that Earth remains far colder than historical norms.
Climate-concerned narrative
The 1.5°C threshold has been breached over three years, driven by rising greenhouse gas levels, marking a dangerous climate breakdown that threatens food systems, water supplies and human civilization itself. Rapid fossil fuel elimination remains urgent as extreme weather escalates, yet progress remains devastatingly slow despite renewable energy offering economic benefits and energy security.
Optimist narrative
Climate change is real, but it is manageable through innovation and human progress. The focus should be on improving lives, not fear. Advances in renewables, electric vehicles, and nuclear energy have already cut projected emissions by over 40%. Lowering the Green Premium and investing in affordable zero-carbon technologies can help the world adapt and thrive while continuing the progress already underway.
Narrative D
The science of climate is evolving as rapidly as the climate itself. Traditional models that focused narrowly on carbon now struggle to explain complex processes such as the water cycle, forests' roles, and biosphere feedbacks. Emphasis should be on a biosphere-centered understanding in which forests and moisture dynamics shape climate stability as much as greenhouse gases — reshaping how we study and address global change.
Nerd narrative
There's a 45% chance that large-scale solar radiation management will be used to mitigate the effects of climate change in the 21st century, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
South Korea Seeks Death Penalty for Ex-President Yoon
South Korean prosecutors requested the death penalty for former President Yoon Suk Yeol during closing arguments on Tuesday, following his criminal trial for insurrection and abuse of power related to his December 2024 martial law declaration.
Yoon's martial law declaration on Dec. 3, 2024, lasted approximately six hours before the National Assembly voted it down, with lawmakers forcing their way into the compound despite military and police presence to pass a motion lifting the decree.
Prosecutors accused Yoon of showing no remorse for actions motivated by a "lust for power aimed at dictatorship and long-term rule," while Yoon's defense team compared him to historical figures like Galileo Galilei, who were wrongfully condemned.
Narrative A
Yoon's martial law declaration was a calculated attempt to establish a dictatorship and seize total state power, making it a constitutional crime that demands harsher punishment than past military coups to prevent future attacks on democracy. The death penalty is necessary because elite officials who violate the constitutional order pose an ongoing threat that must be met with the strictest accountability.
Narrative B
Yoon's martial law was a brief, symbolic warning about pro-CCP and North Korean influence within the opposition Democratic Party, not a power grab. Troops carried no ammunition, didn't block parliament's vote, and withdrew within hours. The death penalty demand is politically motivated retaliation meant to silence legitimate national security concerns about foreign interference rather than pursue proportionate justice.
Narrative C
No one, including a former president, is above the law — but pursuing the death penalty would be a step backward. The death penalty demand against Yoon is a cruel and irreversible punishment that contradicts the very human rights principles that the justice system claims to uphold. Pursuing execution undermines human dignity and the rule of law, turning accountability into political revenge rather than justice.
Nerd narrative
There's a 1% chance that former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will be convicted of any criminal charges before Jan. 16, 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Trump Says 'Killing in Iran Is Stopping' After US Threatens 'Strong Action'
As human rights groups reported more than 2,400 anti-government demonstrators had been killed by Iranian authorities, and the U.S. military had prepared for potential strikes, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed Wednesday that the "killing in Iran is stopping," and planned executions would not go ahead, citing "very important sources on the other side." He added that the U.S. will "watch and see what the process is" before taking military action in Iran off the table.
Trump had earlier vowed "very strong action" if protesters were executed, with two European officials warning of potential U.S. military action against Iran within 24 hours. Although Trump has since seemingly toned down his rhetoric, U.S. and British troops and personnel were still reported to be evacuating from Qatar, and German airline Lufthansa told employees to evacuate Israel. Britain has also closed its embassy in Tehran, with its ambassador and all consular staff evacuated Wednesday evening.
This comes after Erfan Soltani, a 26-year-old Iranian man detained on Jan. 8, was reportedly sentenced to death and was scheduled for execution on Jan. 14, according to human rights organizations. The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights stated that this "will certainly not be a single case."
Anti-Iran narrative
Iran's desperate regime is now resorting to executing protesters after sham trials, stripping citizens of basic legal rights for the crime of dissent. These executions draw the red line — the moment Washington needs to move from outrage to U.S. military intervention as a last resort, cast as unavoidable. Thousands have been killed or detained under shoot-to-kill orders and internet blackouts meant to bury the violence. The bloodshed is an unforgivable crime against humanity, deliberately echoing the regime’s mass killings of the 1980s to legitimize escalation.
Pro-Iran narrative
The U.S. is manufacturing a pretext for military intervention and regime change by ignoring rioters' shocking violence — including public lynchings, mosque burnings, and gunmen opening fire — while relying on regime-change networks to inflate death tolls. Western media's one-sided portrayal deliberately obscures that these are not peaceful protesters but violent insurrectionists backed by Mossad and U.S. intelligence. Trump and Netanyahu are the real killers of Iranians, having slaughtered over a thousand civilians during their day military aggression in June 2025.
Establishment-critical narrative
Iran's crackdown is brutal, and sham trials followed by executions deliver the images that everyone, especially the White House, has been waiting for. Death turns into leverage, outrage into policy momentum. The same powers in Washington that flattened cities elsewhere now speak the language of restraint, until escalation suits their interests. The Trump administration can now control the narrative — all of this just shows how efficiently violence can be translated into an excuse to attack.
Nerd narrative
There is a 19% chance that Iran will possess a nuclear weapon before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Uganda Shuts Down Internet Ahead of Presidential Election
Uganda's authorities suspended public internet access starting at 6 p.m. local time on Tuesday, two days before the presidential election, with the Uganda Communications Commission citing the need to prevent "misinformation, disinformation, electoral fraud" and incitement of violence.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, 81, who has been in power since 1986, urged supporters not to be intimidated by "threats of violence" as he seeks a seventh term in the Jan. 15 election. He faces main challenger Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, 43, in a rematch of the 2021 vote.
Joint military and police deployments were rolled out nationwide during the campaign period, with President Museveni reportedly instructing security forces to disperse opposition rallies using tear gas in a "methodical" manner and only after issuing clear warnings
Pro-government narrative
Temporary internet restrictions ahead of elections protect vote integrity and democratic stability as Uganda consolidates its transition to middle-income country status. Security agencies disrupt coordinated cyber operations targeting results transmission, vote-tallying systems, and election management infrastructure. This protection effort prevents manipulation at a decisive moment, when the credibility of the outcome underpins Uganda’s economic and political ascent.
Government-critical narrative
Shutting down the internet ahead of elections is a blatant assault on press freedom and democratic participation. Security forces are beating and arresting journalists covering opposition rallies, detaining activists, and suspending human rights organizations that document abuses. This coordinated repression is designed to eliminate scrutiny at a decisive democratic moment — precisely when citizens most need access to information, transparency, and independent reporting.
Nerd narrative
There is a 14% chance that an East African Federation will exist and govern before 2040, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
US Approves Nvidia H200 AI Chip Exports to China
The Trump administration formally approved the export of NVIDIA's H200 AI chips to China on Tuesday, easing controls that the U.S. government imposed on the semiconductors due to Washington's national security concerns.
U.S. President Donald Trump first announced the shift in U.S. policy in December 2025, stating at the time that the U.S. would export the chips to "approved customers" in China under "strong" national security conditions, with the U.S. to collect a 25% fee from the sales.
In a regulation published on Tuesday, the Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) stated that it henceforth review export license applications for H200 chips and their equivalents on a case-by-case basis, from its previous presumption of denial.
Pro-government narrative
The BIS's revised export policy strikes the right balance between national security and economic reality through its rigorous standards. By requiring certification of sufficient domestic supply and mandating robust security procedures, this approach protects key American interests while maintaining the commercial viability of its technology sector by permitting it to trade with China.
Government-critical narrative
Allowing NVIDIA to export H200 chips to China is a dangerous betrayal of American interests and national security. The decision abandons the administration's America First principles by handing coveted U.S. technology to its greatest geopolitical rival, reducing America's lead in the AI race while simultaneously strengthening China's technological capabilities and military power.
Nerd narrative
There is a 4% chance that any NVIDIA GPUs better than the H200 will be allowed to be exported to China before March 14, 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Canada: Carney Visits China Amid US Rift
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for his first official visit to China, marking the first time a Canadian leader has visited the country in eight years. Carney is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday.
Carney's trip to China is part of efforts to diversify Canada's trade relationships and reduce economic reliance on the U.S., which accounts for around 70% of Canadian exports. China is Canada's second-largest trading partner but represents less than 5% of exports.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is joining Carney for a portion of the China visit, raising expectations of potential deals on canola or other agricultural exports. However, Canadian officials indicated they expect progress on trade but not a definitive elimination of tariffs.
Left narrative
Renewing the strategic partnership with China makes economic sense for Canada. As the world's second-largest economy and Canada's second-largest trading partner, a pragmatic relationship with Beijing creates greater stability and prosperity. This signals a mature diplomatic approach on Canada's part.
Right narrative
Pivoting toward China means embracing an authoritarian dictatorship that threatens Canadian sovereignty through election meddling, secret police stations and Arctic incursions. Trading American democracy for a Chinese dictatorship abandons Canadian values for a regime that crushes dissent.
Narrative C
Trump's reckless "Donroe Doctrine" is catastrophically backfiring. His threats to seize Canada as a 51st state and his brutal Venezuela intervention have shattered old alliances, driving Ottawa into Beijing's arms. What should have been the U.S.'s most reliable partner now seeks refuge with its greatest rival.
Nerd narrative
There is a 4% chance the U.S. will annex any part of Canada before June 3, 2072, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Trump: Federal Payments to Sanctuary Cities Will Halt Feb. 1
U.S. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that the federal government will halt payments to sanctuary jurisdictions starting Feb. 1, writing that all sanctuary cities do is "BREED CRIME AND VIOLENCE."
Previously, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) identified more than 30 jurisdictions as sanctuary locations, including states California, Illinois, Minnesota and New York, as well as major cities — including Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Boston.
Democratic Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Democratic New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that they would fight the funding cuts in court. Johnson stated that the funds belong to the people of Chicago, not the president, and vowed to restore every dollar withheld by the administration.
Republican narrative
Cutting federal funding to jurisdictions that refuse to enforce immigration law isn't punitive — it's basic accountability. Sanctuary cities shield criminals and gang members while demanding billions in taxpayer money, creating safe havens for violent offenders and drug traffickers. States that side with lawlessness forfeit their right to federal subsidies.
Democratic narrative
Withholding congressionally approved federal funds from entire states because of disagreements over immigration policy is blatantly unconstitutional and illegal. This authoritarian move would devastate families and local economies while violating the separation of powers. Fighting this lawless overreach in courts and Congress is essential.
Nerd narrative
There's a 49% chance that the United States will establish a government program rewarding information leading to deportations before Jan. 3, 2027, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
US, Danish and Greenlandic Officials Meet as Tensions Rise Over Trump's Acquisition Push
U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building for about 50 minutes on Wednesday.
Before the meeting, President Donald Trump said the U.S. needs Greenland for national security purposes and that anything less than U.S. control is "unacceptable." He has suggested that NATO should help the U.S. acquire the territory and, in a Truth Social post, said this would protect against Russia and China.
Denmark announced it would increase its military presence in and around Greenland, deploying aircraft, naval vessels and soldiers, including forces from NATO allies. Sweden also confirmed it was sending military officers to Greenland at Denmark's request as part of allied military exercises.
Pro-Trump narrative
NATO should support America's acquisition of Greenland because the alliance would be far more formidable with the territory under U.S. control. Greenland is essential for the Golden Dome missile defense system and protecting against Russian and Chinese military threats in the Arctic. Denmark's weak military presence proves that only the U.S. can properly defend this strategically vital territory.
Anti-Trump narrative
Trump's imperial threats toward Greenland represent a reckless destabilization of Arctic cooperation that has shattered decades of diplomatic progress. His scorched-earth approach has done more damage to regional security than Russia or China could have dreamed of, undermining Indigenous sovereignty and NATO alliances alike. The Arctic's future depends on respecting Greenlandic self-determination, not treating the island as real estate to plunder for minerals.
US Announces Phase Two of Trump's Gaza Peace Plan
U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced the launch of Phase Two of President Donald Trump's 20-point plan to end the Gaza conflict on Wednesday, transitioning from ceasefire to "demilitarization, technocratic governance and reconstruction."
Phase Two establishes a transitional technocratic Palestinian administration in Gaza called the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), which will oversee demilitarization and reconstruction, including the disarmament of "all unauthorized personnel." The NCAG will be headed by Ali Shaath, a former deputy planning minister in the Palestinian Authority.
In the announcement, Witkoff said the U.S. "expects Hamas to comply fully with its obligations," including the immediate return of the final deceased hostage, Ran Gvili, a 24-year-old police officer killed during the Oct. 7, 2023, attack, with failure to do so bringing "serious consequences."
Pro-establishment narrative
Trump's decisive leadership has delivered historic results in Gaza, successfully maintaining the ceasefire, returning all living hostages and 27 deceased hostages while providing unprecedented humanitarian aid. Phase Two now launches a technocratic Palestinian administration to demilitarize Gaza and begin reconstruction, with Egypt, Turkey and Qatar's indispensable mediation creating a genuine path toward stability and peace.
Pro-Israel narrative
Phase Two promises “demilitarization,” but Hamas will never disarm voluntarily. It has proven this again and again, attacking even as negotiations continue. Words, warnings and deadlines mean nothing to an armed movement built for war. Only overwhelming, credible force can end Hamas’ grip. Ignoring that reality just guarantees more attacks — and more empty threats.
Pro-Palestine narrative
Israel has violated the ceasefire over 1,190 times, killing more than 400 Palestinians and blocking critical aid despite claims of "historic humanitarian assistance." The Trump plan serves Israeli expansionist objectives by providing diplomatic cover for ethnic cleansing while ignoring Palestinian rights and Israel's obligations as an occupying power to allow unimpeded aid deliveries.
Narrative D
Phase Two cannot move forward while even one hostage remains behind. Advancing now abandons the last real leverage to bring Ran Gvili home and betrays the families promised he would not be left behind. Diplomacy that trades urgency for process risks turning captivity into permanent disappearance. No reconstruction or transition is legitimate until the final hostage returns.
