Google Parent Alphabet Hits $4T Valuation After Apple AI Deal

The Facts

  • Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, reached a market valuation of $4 trillion on Monday. It is the fourth company behind Nvidia, Microsoft and Apple to achieve the valuation, all of whom reached the milestone last year.

  • The rise of Alphabet came after Google and Apple announced in a joint statement that the firms had entered into a multi-year agreement in which Apple would integrate Google's AI technology, including Gemini, into its models and devices, including in Apple's voice assistant Siri.

  • "After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google's Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users," the firms said.

The Spin

Optimist narrative

The rise of Alphabet and Google is largely down to their successful entry into the AI market, as demonstrated by this latest multi-year deal with Apple in which it will rely on Google's AI services. This deal is not only good for Google, but Apple too — which can now better navigate into the field of AI — and both firms saw increases in their stock price after it was agreed.

Cynical narrative

Not only has Alphabet reached a $4 trillion valuation, its market cap surpassed that of Apple's earlier in the year. The swapping of places is telling of their trajectories Alphabet has invested time and resources into AI and is now sowing the rewards. Apple did not and now finds itself floundering, with little to speak of in the AI field.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that Google will be supplanted as the top search engine in the U.S. by market share by April 2041, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Israel, Ethiopia Strengthen Ties Amid Somaliland Tensions

The Facts

  • Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar met with Ethiopian State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hadera Abera Admassu in Jerusalem, with Israel describing Ethiopia as a "long-term strategic partner" and expressing intent to further strengthen bilateral ties.

  • The meeting between Israeli and Ethiopian officials took place ahead of the fourth Ethio-Israel Political Consultation scheduled in Jerusalem, with discussions covering "regional and multilateral issues of shared interest," including security challenges and economic cooperation.

  • Ethiopia is currently involved in disputes with Egypt, Sudan, Somalia and Eritrea over border issues, water security and access to maritime outlets, including tensions over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Nile River.

The Spin

Pro-Israel narrative

Gideon Sa'ar hosting Hadera Abera Admassu in Israel underscores a deliberate push to anchor Red Sea security through reliable regional partners. Israel's recognition of Somaliland and deepening ties with Ethiopia reflect strategic necessity in countering jihadist networks and Iranian proxies along vital maritime routes. Somaliland offers a stable, democratic foothold at a critical chokepoint, while Ethiopia's long-standing cooperation provides regional legitimacy for expanded counterterrorism coordination across the Horn of Africa.

Anti-Israel narrative

The optics of Israel accelerating Horn of Africa diplomacy come into sharper focus as Gideon Sa'ar hosts Hadera Abera Admassu in Jerusalem. Israel's recognition of Somaliland undermines Somalia's sovereignty, fuels al-Shabaab’s jihadist narrative, and risks drawing Israel into unresolved regional conflicts. Closer alignment with Ethiopia prioritizes geopolitical positioning over collective security, fragmenting counterterrorism coordination in a region already strained by proxy rivalries and displacement risks.

Nerd narrative

There is a 38% chance that state-based conflict between Egypt and Ethiopia cause at least 1,000 deaths in a single year before 2070, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

GOP Rep Introduces Bill to Annex Greenland as US State

The Facts

  • Representative Randy Fine (R-Fla.) introduced the Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act on Monday. The bill would authorize President Donald Trump to take necessary steps, including negotiations with Denmark, to annex Greenland as a U.S. territory.

  • A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers, including Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), will visit Denmark this week to respect the sovereignty of both Denmark and Greenland. The White House has said there was no set timeline to acquire Greenland.

  • White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump believes U.S. control is necessary to prevent China or Russia from taking over the island, a scenario Fine has cited as one reason — to "secure our northern flank" — for introducing his bill.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Acquiring Greenland isn't optional; it's essential for national security as Russian and Chinese warships flood Arctic waterways that Greenland can't defend with its minimal capabilities. Modern weaponry and opening ice routes make control of this mineral-rich territory critical for international security, and relying on Denmark to protect American interests simply isn't viable when adversaries are positioning destroyers and submarines throughout the region.

Anti-Trump narrative

Seizing Greenland would destroy NATO, end decades of alliance with Denmark, and provide justification for every authoritarian land grab worldwide while accomplishing nothing that couldn't be achieved through existing agreements. Any invasion lacking congressional approval represents a flagrant breach of constitutional authority and international law, potentially triggering catastrophic diplomatic and legal consequences for America's global standing.

Trump Ends Temporary Protected Status for Somali Nationals

The Facts

  • The Trump administration on Tuesday announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalia, requiring Somali nationals to leave the U.S. by March 17.

  • In a statement to Fox News, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem stated that "Country conditions in Somalia have improved to the point that it no longer meets the law's requirement for Temporary Protected Status."

  • "Temporary means temporary," she added. "Further, allowing Somali nationals to remain temporarily in the United States is contrary to our national interests. We are putting Americans first."

The Spin

Left narrative

Ending TPS for Somalis ignores the reality that Somalia remains plagued by al-Shabaab violence, severe drought and humanitarian crises that have displaced millions. Sending 2,471 people back to dangerous conditions puts lives at risk based on unsubstantiated fraud claims that scapegoat an entire community. This decision targets Minnesota for its diversity while federal agents terrorize communities.

Right narrative

Somalia's conditions have improved enough to no longer justify temporary protection, and allowing Somalis to remain contradicts national interests when billions in taxpayer dollars have been stolen through organized fraud. Minnesota has become ground zero for immigration fraud within Somali clans who lied on documents to access programs meant for vulnerable Americans.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that at least 10 countries will formally recognize Somaliland as an independent state before February 2037, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Dilbert Creator Scott Adams Dies of Cancer at 68

The Facts

  • Scott Adams, creator of the Dilbert comic strip, died on Tuesday at age 68 after battling prostate cancer that had spread to his bones. His ex-wife Shelly Miles announced his death during the "Real Coffee with Scott Adams" livestream.

  • Adams launched Dilbert in 1989 while working as an applications engineer at Pacific Bell, drawing inspiration from his corporate experiences. At its peak, the strip was syndicated to approximately 2,000 newspapers internationally.

  • In 2023, Adams made a video responding to a survey that found only 53% of Black Americans believed it was "okay to be white," calling them a "hate group" and advising White people to "get the hell away" from them. Hundreds of newspapers subsequently dropped Dilbert, and distributor Andrews McMeel Universal severed ties with him.

The Spin

Right narrative

Scott Adams spent three decades using Dilbert to puncture corporate absurdity and expose how power, language and incentives really work. When cancellation came, he refused ritual apologies or ideological submission, choosing honesty over safety. He faced public shaming and terminal illness with clarity and courage, defending free expression against a culture that punishes dissent. His legacy is creative independence, intellectual fearlessness and a final stand against enforced conformity.

Left narrative

Scott Adams' cultural impact does not erase the harm of his 2023 statements, which labeled Black people as a whole a "hate group" and urged racial separation. Newspapers dropped Dilbert because the comments crossed from satire into demeaning generalization, echoing a long history of racist caricature in media. Free expression allows speech, but institutions are not obliged to amplify ideas that stigmatize entire communities. Condolences can be offered without white washing his harmful legacy of racism.

Report: Israel Planning Renewed Gaza Offensive in March

The Facts

  • The Times of Israel released a report on Saturday alleging that Israel is planning to launch a new offensive in Gaza this coming March, according to an Israeli official. The offensive would reportedly seek to expand the "yellow line" — which divides Gaza into Israeli and Hamas-controlled zones.

  • An Arab official with knowledge of the plan said that Israel would not be able to undertake the offensive without U.S. support. The official added that, though Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump to advance the ceasefire, he does not believe that Hamas will disarm.

  • The reported offensive would focus on Gaza City. The report comes only a few days after Hamas announced that it would dissolve its government in Gaza after the "technocratic committee" stipulated in a U.S.-brokered and U.N.-backed ceasefire agreement comes to power.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Though the future will be challenging, it is essential that both Israel and Hamas stick to the ceasefire. Of course, many aspects of the deal are potentially problematic, but nothing is gained from returning to war. Hamas must follow through with what it agreed to, and, in turn, Israel should not escalate the situation.

Pro-Israel narrative

It is paramount that Israel remains in Gaza until Hamas disarms and disbands. Israel will not accept a pre-Oct. 7 status quo, and the only solution to the conflict remains Hamas' defeat. The yellow line is necessary to maintain Israel's military gains and ensure that Hamas cannot rebuild.

Pro-Palestine narrative

The "yellow line" — an arbitrary border Israel has drawn to cement its occupation of Gaza — is an incredibly clear demonstration of Israel's continued genocidal policies. The ceasefire has been a sham, with Israel killing Palestinians on a near daily basis for no other reason than to further terrorize the population. Stability will only occur in the Middle East when Israel is forced to end its genocidal occupation.

DOJ Officials Resign Over Declined Probe of ICE Shooter

The Facts

  • At least six senior officials from the U.S. Department of Justice's (DOJ) Civil Rights Division criminal section have resigned following Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon's decision not to investigate the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by ICE agent Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis last week.

  • The criminal section of the Civil Rights Division typically investigates fatal shootings by law enforcement officers and specializes in examining potential abuse or improper use of force. Video footage from the incident appears to show that Good's wheels were turned away from Ross when he fired three shots, while other angles appear to show the vehicle making contact with the agent.

  • The FBI has announced that it would handle the investigation independently and blocked Minnesota authorities from their typical role in reviewing evidence. On Tuesday, the state of Minnesota and the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul filed a lawsuit challenging the federal government's actions.

The Spin

Republican narrative

Dhillon has made the right call. The FBI is already handling the investigation, and the departure of these woke career prosecutors, who wanted to persecute police officers, saves Dhillon the trouble of firing them. The Civil Rights Division exists to enforce federal civil rights laws, not to pursue ideological witch hunts against officers doing their jobs. Luckily, Dhillon is returning the DOJ to its main purpose.

Democratic narrative

Dhillon's decision represents a complete abandonment of the Civil Rights Division's core mission to protect constitutional rights and moves the DOJ closer to becoming a politicized machine that shields law enforcement from accountability. Blocking state authorities from accessing evidence while the FBI investigates shows this administration has no intention of conducting a legitimate use-of-force investigation.

Trump Tells Iranians 'Help is on Its Way' as Over 2K Reported Killed in Protests

The Facts

  • U.S. President Donald Trump urged Iranian protesters on Tuesday to keep demonstrating and to "take over" their institutions, stating he had canceled all meetings with Iranian officials until the killing of protesters stops and that "help is on its way."

  • According to Reuters, an anonymous Iranian official reported that 2,000 have so far been killed in the protests, though a breakdown of the toll wasn't provided. The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency said that 2,003 people, including 1,850 protesters and 135 security personnel, have died. The organization also stated that over 16,700 people had been detained, a sharp increase from previous figures.

  • Trump announced on Monday that he would impose 25% tariffs on products from any country doing business with Iran, which currently includes Middle Eastern and East Asian countries, notably China, Iran's leading export partner, which bought 77% of its oil exports in 2024 and criticized the tariff announcement.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

The West is right to threaten Iran and stand with its people. Nationwide protests face mass shootings by a theocracy that survives through fear. Credible U.S. force — aimed at the regime's security apparatus — can deter massacres, break intimidation and tip fence-sitters into action. Diplomacy without taking out the rulers only makes things worse; real help, including decisive pressure, honors those risking their lives and restores U.S. credibility.

Establishment-critical narrative

Threatening Iran "any way necessary" risks turning a real, economically rooted protest cycle into a foreign-policy project that discredits it and invites a brutal crackdown. Sanctions have already deepened hardship, and overt U.S.-Israeli backing feeds the regime's claim of foreign subversion, consolidating loyalist security forces. External strikes could spark regional war, kill civilians and still leave the coercive state intact, shifting the cost onto Iranians.

Pro-Iran narrative

Iran maintains internal order through necessary security measures against violence, sabotage and foreign-backed armed elements that hijack legitimate economic grievances to attack state institutions, security forces and civilians. Labeling this as inherent coercion ignores the context of orchestrated subversion, property destruction and threats to public safety, which any sovereign state must counter to preserve stability and prevent chaos or external exploitation.

Nerd narrative

There's a 25% chance that the United States and Iran will sign a new agreement restricting Iran's nuclear program before 2029, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

ICJ Begins Hearings on Myanmar Rohingya Genocide Case

The Facts

  • The International Court of Justice (ICJ) began hearings on Monday in a case filed by Gambia in 2019, which accused Myanmar of committing genocide against the Rohingya minority. The hearings mark the first full genocide case the ICJ has heard in over a decade.

  • Myanmar's military launched an offensive in 2017 that forced at least 730,000 Rohingya from their homes into Bangladesh, where refugees recounted killings, mass rape and arson. A U.N. fact-finding mission concluded the offensive included genocidal acts.

  • Myanmar authorities rejected genocide accusations, stating the military offensive was a legitimate counterterrorism campaign responding to attacks by alleged Rohingya armed groups. During 2019 preliminary hearings, then-leader Aung San Suu Kyi dismissed the allegations as incomplete and misleading.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Myanmar's case stands apart as evidence shows clear genocidal intent — mass killings, gang rape, village burnings and the forced expulsion of more than 700,000 Rohingya in a coordinated military campaign. U.N. investigators, U.S. determinations and survivor testimony align on intent to destroy a group in whole or part. With state conduct documented and denied implausibly, the ICJ has rare grounds for a genocide conviction.

Establishment-critical narrative

Myanmar should be convicted, but justice cannot stop there. If the ICJ affirms that mass killing, displacement, and deliberate destruction of a protected group trigger genocide obligations, the same standard must apply universally. Selective accountability undermines the Genocide Convention. The court's credibility depends on pursuing all states credibly accused of genocidal conduct, including Israel, where provisional measures and mounting evidence demand equal scrutiny.

Brain Microplastics Study Faces Scientific Challenge

The Facts

  • A February 2025 study published in Nature Medicine reported that microplastic and nanoplastic concentrations in human brain tissue may have increased by approximately 50% between 2016 and 2024, with brain samples showing substantially higher concentrations than liver or kidney tissue.

  • However, scientists published a formal challenge to the brain microplastics study last November, stating the research "appears to face methodological challenges, such as limited contamination controls and lack of validation steps, which may affect the reliability of the reported concentrations."

  • The original study used pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze tissue samples from postmortem human liver, kidney and brain specimens collected from the University of New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator between 2016 and 2024.

The Spin

Narrative A

Microplastic detection methods in human tissue are fundamentally flawed, with fat content producing false positives that invalidate claims of plastic accumulation in organs. The brain's 60% fat composition explains why studies report tenfold higher "plastic" levels compared to liver, not actual contamination. Rushed research, lacking proper contamination controls and validation, has created biologically implausible results that misguide policy.

Narrative B

Brain microplastic concentrations reflect real human exposure, not analytical artifacts. Multiple studies using Py-GC/MS and µ-FTIR, combined with rigorous QA/QC and independent verification, confirm nanoplastics in blood and organs. While methods are still improving, variability and interference concerns are acknowledged and addressed by researchers, and the observed trends align with environmental plastic growth, not just tissue fat.
