U.S. Sells $500M Worth of Venezuelan Oil After Maduro Capture

The Facts

  • U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has completed its first sale of Venezuelan oil, valued at around $500 million, following the capture of President Nicolas Maduro. Revenue from the sale is being held in U.S.-controlled bank accounts, with the main account located in Qatar.

  • The U.S. Department of Energy is organizing efforts to sell approximately 50 million barrels of Venezuelan oil that has been stranded since President Trump imposed a partial blockade last month. The sales are expected to continue indefinitely.

  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated the Treasury Department "will oversee the accounts" and manage disbursements back into Venezuela. Trump is reportedly expected to use the money to stabilize Venezuela’s economy and “run” the country indefinitely.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Protecting Venezuelan oil revenue from creditors through executive action ensures economic stability and prevents decades of legal claims from derailing reconstruction efforts. Routing funds through Qatar shields the money from judicial seizures that would undermine critical U.S. efforts to help Venezuela recover after Maduro's removal. This framework guarantees proceeds directly benefit the Venezuelan people rather than enriching foreign creditors.

Anti-Trump narrative

Stashing $500 million from Venezuelan oil sales in Qatar banks creates an offshore slush fund beyond congressional oversight and normal transparency requirements. This unprecedented arrangement lacks public accountability structures and anti-corruption controls that would prevent misuse of billions in proceeds. Setting up foreign accounts to control seized assets represents exactly the kind of suspicious financial maneuvering that demands scrutiny.

Nerd narrative

There is a 11% chance the U.N. General Assembly will adopt a resolution condemning the U.S. operation in Venezuela before Feb. 1, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Canada, China Forge "Strategic Partnership" Following Carney-Xi Meeting

The Facts

  • Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday as part of his visit to China, as the pair sought to strengthen relations between the two countries.

  • In the meeting, Carney petitioned Xi to build a relationship "adapted to new global realities" after pledging to reduce dependence on the U.S. by doubling exports to non-U.S. states. Xi, meanwhile, called for Canada and China to be mutual partners in trade, global cooperation and development.

  • According to a joint statement published after the meeting, the two countries promised to establish a "new Strategic Partnership" centered on cultural ties, as well as cooperation on trade, the economy, energy, finance, multilateralism and public safety and security.

The Spin

Pro-China narrative

Strengthening ties with China through a new strategic partnership delivers concrete economic benefits and security cooperation that serves Canadian interests. This comprehensive understanding advances collaboration across trade, energy and law enforcement, creating boundless opportunities and prosperity for both Canadians and the Chinese people.

Anti-China narrative

Carney's cosying up with China's communist government is nothing short of a complete sellout of Canadian values and sovereignty. All that this so-called strategic partnership achieves is to disastrously align Canada with an authoritarian regime under the promises of an ill-defined "new world order." In doing so, Carney has made Canada in hock to the CCP.

Nerd narrative

There's a 42% chance that the U.S. will impose any new import restriction upon China before March 14, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

US, Denmark Form Working Group Amid Greenland Dispute

The Facts

  • Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland on Wednesday to discuss the future of Greenland. The U.S., Denmark, and Greenland reportedly agreed to establish a working group to address their disagreements.

  • Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said the working group will try to address the diplomatic situation that has emerged over Greenland. President Donald Trump has said Denmark's self-governing region was "vital" to build a "Golden Dome" to protect the U.S.

  • White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the working group was meant for "technical talks on the acquisition of Greenland." Denmark and Greenland have said they were opposed to President Donald Trump’s plan to acquire the island.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Pursuing a closer bond with Greenland boosts U.S. security by securing rare earth metals and countering Russian moves in the Arctic. International law supports this since Greenland can choose association with the U.S. through a referendum, fitting precedents like Puerto Rico or free association deals. And threatening tariffs is just part of the art of the deal, giving the U.S. leverage it has every right to use.

Anti-Trump narrative

Greenland stays firmly under Denmark as its people reject any shift toward the U.S. Deploying more NATO troops underscores the commitment to defend against such overreach, while stalled talks highlight the dead end of forced ownership. Respecting Greenland's choice will strengthen NATO and curb President Trump's reckless aggression, as he now brazenly threatens allies with tariffs.

Zelenskyy Announces Emergency Energy Measures as Trump Blames Him for Lack of Peace Deal

The Facts

  • Facing sub-freezing temperatures with an energy infrastructure that's been repeatedly targeted by Russian attacks in recent days and weeks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday announced a raft of emergency measures intended to ease conditions and restore power and heat.

  • The measures included a relaxation of curfew rules, allowing Ukrainians to access government-run "Invincibility Points" and other shelters that provide heating, electricity, the internet and other amenities. Zelenskyy also ordered the relaxation of rules on energy imports as well as on connecting new equipment to the energy grid.

  • Meanwhile, in an interview with Reuters that was published later on Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump pointed to Zelenskyy as being responsible for a hold-up in reaching a peace deal. Speaking of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump said: "I think he's ready to make a deal. I think Ukraine is less ready to make a deal."

The Spin

Pro-Ukraine narrative

Ukraine has never been a stumbling block in the way of peace. It is the barrage of Russian drones and missiles that repeatedly targets Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, namely its energy facilities, preventing peace. Doing so in the middle of these winter conditions, it's clear that Putin has no goal other than to terrorize Ukrainian civilians. Pressure needs to be applied so he's finally ready to take negotiations seriously.

Pro-Russia narrative

Russia believes it is essential to continue the dialogue with the U.S. on Ukraine, particularly as the U.S. has had several rounds of discussions with Ukrainian and European officials in recent weeks. It is important that Russia is able to express its views on these matters also so it expects that the special envoys of President Trump will soon be making their way.

Pro-Europe narrative

Europe is in favor of restoring relations with Russia — but it's not quite there yet. Namely, because one man by the name of Putin continues to stand in the way of making any meaningful progress towards a Ukraine peace deal. Europe can theorize about the future but there's no indication that Putin is serious about peace at this stage.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance there will be a bilateral ceasefire or peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine by March 2027, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

White House Imposes 25% Tariff on Advanced AI Chips

The Facts

  • The Trump administration announced a new 25% tariff on certain semiconductors, including NVIDIA's H200 and AMD's MI325X, on Wednesday, affecting advanced computing chips entering the U.S. but not for use in its domestic market.

  • A White House fact sheet clarified that the levy would not affect chips imported to the U.S. to support either the buildout of the country's technology supply chain or its domestic manufacturing capacity to produce semiconductor derivatives.

  • The document justifies the measure by citing national security concerns under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, stating that the U.S. lacks sufficient capacity to produce the semiconductors "essential" to U.S. interests, and that the tariff would help incentivize domestic production and reduce reliance on imports.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Imposing a 25% tariff on semiconductors not built for the U.S. market is a crucial measure for national security. As it stands, the U.S. lacks the industry to construct the number of chips required to maintain its military, technological and economic power. Leveraging tariffs will solve this conundrum by incentivizing domestic chip production and reducing American reliance on foreign sources.

Anti-Trump narrative

While the Trump administration may have lofty ambitions for this tariff in the long run, in the short to medium term, it will throw the semiconductor industry and its supply chains into chaos. The tax will cause decisive pricing complications for technology companies and data centers in the Asia-Pacific region, while undercutting the competitiveness of U.S. chips in the Chinese market.

South Korea's Yoon Sentenced to 5 Years Relating to Martial Law Declaration

The Facts

  • A South Korean court on Friday sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to five years in prison on charges including obstructing authorities from executing an arrest warrant and failing to follow legal procedures for martial law. The Seoul Central District Court found Yoon guilty of mobilizing the presidential security service to block investigators.

  • The court ruled that Yoon violated the Constitution by notifying only select Cabinet members before declaring martial law on Dec. 3, 2024, thereby infringing on the deliberation rights of seven State Council members who were not informed. The court emphasized that Cabinet deliberation is required to prevent abuse of presidential emergency powers.

  • Yoon was convicted of fabricating an official document by signing a martial law decree on Dec. 7, 2024, four days after martial law was declared, to create the appearance that proper procedures had been followed. The document was later destroyed at the prime minister's orders.

The Spin

Narrative A

The Corruption Investigation Office fabricated evidence to justify Yoon's arrest by forcing the 55th Guard Unit commander to hand over his official seal and stamping documents themselves without proper authorization. This amounts to abuse of power and to the forgery of official documents, proving that the investigation was illegitimate from the start. The CIO lacked legal authority to investigate insurrection charges, making the entire prosecution a politically motivated witch hunt rather than legitimate law enforcement.

Narrative B

Yoon's five-year sentence for resisting arrest and fabricating martial law documents signifies necessary accountability for a president who privatized state institutions and showed zero remorse for his crimes. The court correctly found that Yoon bypassed constitutional safeguards, ordered armed guards to intimidate investigators and systematically destroyed evidence to conceal his wrongdoing. Restoring the rule of law demands severe punishment for this unprecedented betrayal of public trust.

Yemen Appoints Shaya Mohsen Zindani as New Prime Minister

The Facts

  • Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council (PTC) has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Salem bin Breik and appointed Foreign Minister Shaya Mohsen Zindani as the new prime minister. The council tasked Zindani with forming a new government, the state news agency Saba reported on Thursday.

  • The PTC dismissed Faraj Salmeen al-Bahsani from his membership, citing serious constitutional violations. Al-Bahsani was accused of challenging sovereign decisions and obstructing efforts to place armed forces under ministry authority.

  • The Southern Transitional Council, a separatist group, gained control of areas across southern and eastern Yemen in December, advancing to within reach of the Saudi border. Saudi-backed fighters have since largely retaken those areas.

The Spin

Narrative A

Saudi Arabia has completed its hostile takeover of southern Yemen by purging the last UAE-backed official from the Presidential Leadership Council. The sacking of Bahsani and forced dissolution of the STC under Saudi pressure reveal a foreign power crushing local autonomy and imposing total control through military force and political coercion.

Narrative B

The appointment of Foreign Minister Shaya Zindani as Prime Minister is a crucial step toward restoring legitimate state institutions and ending the Iranian-backed Houthi coup. This cabinet reshuffle advances comprehensive reforms, combats corruption and strengthens unified sovereign decision-making after years of instability.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that Yemen will no longer be classified as being in a state of civil war by November 2027, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Trump Signs the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act

The Facts

  • U.S. President Donald Trump signed the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act into law on Wednesday, allowing schools participating in the National School Lunch Program to serve whole and 2% milk alongside low-fat and fat-free options for the first time since 2012.

  • The legislation reverses restrictions established under the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act signed by former President Barack Obama, which limited schools to offering only low-fat or fat-free milk in an effort to combat childhood obesity.

  • The bill passed the Senate last year on Nov. 21 and the House on Dec. 15, with bipartisan support from lawmakers including Rep. Glenn Thompson (R-PA) and Rep. Kim Schrier (D-WA), who co-sponsored the legislation after 15 years of work on the issue. Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman also notably supported the legislation.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Bringing whole milk back to schools marks a massive victory for children's health and common sense. Whole milk delivers essential nutrients, protein and healthy fats critical for brain development that kids desperately need to grow and thrive. The Obama-era ban on whole milk contributed to skyrocketing childhood obesity and diabetes rates over the past 15 years, and ending this war on saturated fat finally puts real food back on lunch trays, just as Secretary Kennedy's new inverted food pyramid intended. This is what MAHA looks like.

Anti-Trump narrative

Forcing full-fat dairy back into schools prioritizes dairy industry profits over children's health and ignores decades of research linking saturated fats to heart disease and obesity. Early signs of cardiovascular disease are appearing in children with increasing frequency, and adding more saturated fat to lunch trays will only worsen this crisis. Whole milk provides zero nutrients unavailable from healthier sources like beans, nuts and fortified plant-based alternatives. If this is MAHA, it’s just industry marketing dressed up as nutrition.

Establishment-critical narrative

Trump’s whole-milk move isn’t real MAHA reform — it’s a timid half-measure that exposes the movement’s fault lines. Whole milk is still pasteurized, still industrial, still controlled by Big Agribusiness. Real food freedom means raw dairy straight from small family farms, not government-approved milk with a different fat percentage. Until raw milk is legalized, this is politics, not a revolution.

Starmer Signals Support for Teen Social Media Ban as Parents Petition

The Facts

  • U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer indicated that the government is considering imposing a social media ban on children under 16, stating that all options are on the table for protecting children, and that the government is examining Australia's approach to platform age restrictions.

  • This comes as the Smartphone Free Childhood campaign gathered over 100,000 letters to Members of Parliament (MPs) urging support for the ban, with constituent emails being sent to every MP.

  • Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has urged Starmer to back the ban, pledging that her party would block under-16s from social media if elected, with the Conservatives tabling an amendment to the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill, scheduled for a vote in the House of Lords next week.

The Spin

Techno-skeptic narrative

Social media platforms are destroying children's lives through violent content, gang recruitment and mental health crises, with a fold rise in eating disorders among teens. Parents overwhelmingly demand action — as shown by the 100,000 letters sent to MPs in just 36 hours — because they can't fight trillion-dollar attention economies alone. Setting age limits at 16 isn't government overreach; it's the same common-sense protection applied to drinking and driving.

Techno-optimist narrative

Contrary to popular belief, research on thousands of adolescents recently found zero evidence that social media or gaming causes mental health problems. Bans won't reduce screen time; kids will just migrate to other platforms or darker corners of the internet while losing vital support networks that youth, especially vulnerable youth, depend on. The real solution is regulating platform design and algorithms, not stripping young people of their right to access information and develop digital literacy skills.

Canada: Court Rules Emergencies Act Use During Freedom Convoy 'Unreasonable'

The Facts

  • On Friday, a Canadian Federal Court of Appeal ruled that the federal government's invocation of the Emergencies Act in February 2022 during the Freedom Convoy was "unreasonable and [beyond their legal authority]." The court dismissed the government's appeal of a 2024 ruling which deemed the decision unlawful.

  • On Feb. 14, 2022, the Governor General of Canada accepted then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's recommendation and issued the "Proclamation Declaring a Public Order Emergency," marking the first time the Emergencies Act had been invoked since it became law in 1988.

  • The protests began in January 2022 when hundreds of vehicles and thousands of individuals converged in downtown Ottawa to protest public health restrictions during COVID-19, including new vaccination requirements for truckers crossing the border into Canada.

The Spin

Government-critical narrative

Canadians won today. The Federal Court of Appeal confirmed the Trudeau government unlawfully weaponized emergency powers against peaceful protesters, criminalizing dissent and freezing bank accounts of ordinary Canadians who simply opposed government policy. This landmark ruling proves the legal threshold for invoking the Emergencies Act was never met and governments cannot override fundamental freedoms at their whim. Accountability must begin now for this profound democratic failure that vilified and punished citizens instead of engaging in dialogue.

Pro-government narrative

Today's Federal Court of Appeal ruling is a loss for good governance in Canada. The Emergencies Act met the very high legal threshold needed to address a national crisis, where lawful protest had descended into lawlessness, with downtown Ottawa gridlocked for 18 days and border points blocked. Commissioner Rouleau found credible evidence of a public order emergency, and cabinet reasonably feared the situation was worsening. The extraordinary powers were necessary to restore peace, order and good government after policing failures created conditions requiring federal intervention.

Cynical narrative

The court ruled the Emergencies Act was used illegally, but nobody will face consequences. Trudeau, Freeland and Ottawa’s officials violated Canadians’ rights, froze bank accounts and made arrests — and yet, will face zero accountability. If breaking the Charter carries no cost, what’s the point of this “victory” for justice at all?
