Khamenei Admits Thousands Killed in Protests, Blames Trump

The Facts

  • Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated in a series of X posts on Saturday that he considers U.S. President Donald Trump a "criminal" and "guilty due to the casualties, damages and slander inflicted on the Iranian nation" during recent protests that began in late December over economic conditions.

  • Khamenei publicly acknowledged for the first time that "several thousand people" were killed during the anti-government demonstrations, adding some died in what he described as an "inhuman" and "savage" manner, though he blamed the U.S. and Israel for the deaths.

  • In an X post, the U.S. State Department said that it had received reports suggesting "the Islamic Republic is preparing options for targeting American bases," warning that any attack on American assets would be met with "a force that is very, very powerful" and cautioning against playing "games with President Trump."

The Spin

Anti-Iran narrative

Khamenei's regime is collapsing from within and desperately scapegoating America to distract from its own brutality. The Supreme Leader admitted thousands died in protests, yet refuses accountability, instead blaming foreign enemies without evidence while threatening further crackdowns. This is the language of a dictatorship losing control and preparing its population for confrontation rather than reform.

Pro-Iran narrative

America orchestrated sedition in Iran through direct planning and incitement, with Trump personally encouraging rioters and promising military support. Iran successfully defeated this foreign plot and extinguished the unrest that Washington and Tel Aviv designed to swallow the country. The real criminals are the international actors who hijacked peaceful protests into violent riots.

Nerd narrative

There's a 63% chance that Ali Khamenei will cease to be Supreme Leader of Iran before 2027, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Syria, SDF Agree Ceasefire; Forces to Integrate

The Facts

  • The Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Sunday agreed to an immediate ceasefire that will see SDF forces withdraw to areas east of the Euphrates River and integrate into Syria's military and state institutions.

  • Syrian government forces captured strategic assets, including the Euphrates Dam, the Omar oilfield and the Conoco gas field, prior to the ceasefire, dealing territorial defeats to the SDF in Raqqa and Deir el-Zour provinces.

  • Under the agreement, the Syrian government will assume control of the governorates of Raqqa, Deir Ezzor and al-Hasakah, including all border crossings and oil and gas fields that had been under SDF control for over a decade.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

The ceasefire agreement marks a pivotal moment where Syria reclaims sovereignty over its entire territory through peaceful integration. The deal ensures state control over critical resources, such as oil fields and border crossings, while protecting employees from punitive measures. America's strong support demonstrates that this signifies genuine progress toward a unified Syria that defeats terrorism.

Establishment-critical narrative

The SDF capitulated only after military pressure forced a retreat from nearly half its territory, abandoning hopes for decentralized governance. Hardliners prevented meaningful negotiation, leaving the Kurdish group no choice but to accept Damascus's authoritarian centralized model. This collapse creates dangerous instability that IS will exploit during the chaotic transition.

Nerd narrative

There's a 10% chance that Syria will be partitioned into new, internationally recognized sovereign states before 2040, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

At least 40 Killed as High-Speed Trains Collide in Spain

The Facts

  • Forty people are confirmed dead after an Iryo train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed near Adamuz and collided with a Renfe train traveling from Madrid to Huelva on Sunday, at around 7:45 p.m. local time. Emergency services treated 122 people for injuries, with 41 still in hospital. Eleven adults and one child are in intensive care, and rescue efforts continue.

  • The Iryo train, carrying around 300 passengers, derailed and crossed onto an adjacent track, where it struck the oncoming Renfe train, which had approximately 200 passengers on board and was traveling at around 200 kilometers per hour at the time of impact.

  • The 27-year-old driver of the Renfe train was among the fatalities. Rescue operations were complicated by the carriages' deteriorated condition, as the front two cars of the Renfe train plunged down an embankment after the collision.

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

The Sánchez government has acted swiftly following the catastrophic high-speed train crash near Córdoba, coordinating rescue efforts and emergency response with regional authorities. The entire country mourns this immense tragedy as the state is providing full support to victims and families, deploying medical units and stabilising services and ensuring a thorough investigation into the cause to strengthen safety on Spain's celebrated rail network.

Government-critical narrative

This preventable disaster exposes years of infrastructure neglect while the government squandered hundreds of millions on foreign train systems instead of fixing domestic rail safety. Taxpayer money got funneled into progressive agenda items rather than critical maintenance that could have saved over 40 lives. Misplaced priorities and financial mismanagement directly contributed to families losing loved ones on their way home.

China's Population Falls 3.4M, Births Hit Lowest Rate Since 1949

The Facts

  • China's population declined by 3.39 million in 2025 to reach 1.405 billion, marking the fourth consecutive year of population decrease. The total number of births fell to 7.92 million, down 17% from 9.54 million in 2024, marking the lowest birth count since 1949.

  • The birth rate dropped to 5.63 per 1,000 people in 2025, while the death rate reached 8.04 per 1,000 people, the highest since 1968. Deaths rose to 11.31 million from 10.93 million in 2024, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

  • People over 60 now account for approximately 23% of China's total population. By 2035, the number of over-60s is projected to reach 400 million, roughly equal to the combined populations of the United States and Italy.

The Spin

Pro-China narrative

China's demographic shift isn't a crisis but an opportunity for transformation. The declining population accelerates economic restructuring toward innovation-driven growth, with R&D investment surging fold since 1991 and labor productivity jumping 5.7%. Pro-family policies are meanwhile working — marriages rebounded 8.5% in early 2025, and comprehensive support systems spanning childcare subsidies to elderly care services are unlocking a projected 30 trillion yuan silver economy by 2035.

Anti-China narrative

China faces civilizational collapse as its population plummets toward 330 million by 2100, the steepest peacetime decline in history. No country has successfully reversed declining fertility through government policy, and Beijing's pronatalist measures like mandated epidurals and IVF subsidies miss the real problem — young people trapped in economic stagnation, gender inequality, and deep societal pessimism are choosing to be the "last generation." This closing demographic window may push an ambitious regime toward dangerous external aggression before it's too late.

Nerd narrative

There is a 50% chance that China's total population will be at least 1.16 billion in 2050, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Japan's Takaichi Dissolves House of Representatives; Calls Snap Election for Feb. 8

The Facts

  • Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced on Friday that she had dissolved the House of Representatives for a snap general election to take place on Feb. 8. Official election activities will begin on Jan. 27, giving parties 12 days to campaign before the vote.

  • The election — previously scheduled for October 2028 — will decide all 465 seats in parliament's lower house and mark Takaichi's first electoral test since she became Japan's first female prime minister as leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in October.

  • Prior to dissolution, Takaichi's LDP and its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, held a slim lower-house majority of 233 seats, with 199 and 34, respectively. Takaichi said she is seeking a new mandate from the people to continue building a "new nation" as prime minister.

The Spin

Left narrative

Takaichi's snap election gamble is reckless and dangerous. It risks economic chaos, with a weak yen hitting year lows and inflation crushing voters, while her China bluster triggers tourist flight cancellations, rare earth export bans and heightened regional instability. Her sky-high approval ratings mask deep distrust in the LDP, and rushing a third election in 16 months puts personal and partisan interests above the national good.

Right narrative

Takaichi's decisive leadership and fresh approach as Japan's first female prime minister deserve a strong mandate to tackle inflation and stand firm against China's aggression. Her 70% approval ratings reflect genuine public support for tougher immigration policies and constitutional reform, giving her the legitimacy to pursue bold economic stimulus and hitherto ignored national security measures.

Nerd narrative

There is a 50% chance the LDP will lose its status as the largest party in the House of Representatives of Japan by July 2042, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

DOJ Will Not Investigate Fatal ICE Shooting, Probes Minnesota Protesters and Politicians

The Facts

  • Todd Blanche, the U.S. Deputy Attorney General, confirmed to Fox News on Sunday that the Department of Justice (DOJ) will not be probing the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by Jonathan Ross, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, in Minneapolis on Jan. 7.

  • "We don't just go out and investigate every time an officer is forced to defend himself against somebody or putting his life in danger," Blanche said. U.S. officials continued to assert that Good endangered the life of Ross, while critics cite analysis of video footage showing she backed up and veered to the right, away from the agent, before he started firing.

  • Last week, sources told the media that at least six prosecutors from the DOJ's Civil Rights Division resigned over the decision not to pursue an investigation into the case.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

The DOJ does not automatically investigate every time that a federal agent is forced to defend themselves from someone putting their lives in danger. The department will investigate when it's appropriate to investigate and it will not bow down to pressure from the media or politicians.

Left narrative

Despite videos undermining official accounts that the ICE agent was endangered, in addition to evidence showing that it was several minutes before Good received any medical attention, investigations are only being pursued against local protesters and politicians who are seeking justice. Trump continues to run roughshod over the traditional independence of the DOJ.

Nerd narrative

There is a 50% chance that the average number of noncitizens removed annually from the U.S. for fiscal years 2026 through 2028 will be at least 453,000, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Oxfam: Billionaire Wealth Jumps to Highest Ever at $18.3T

The Facts

  • Figures published by Oxfam on Monday show that the number of billionaires worldwide surpassed 3,000 for the first time in 2025, and their collective wealth reached a record $18.3 trillion. Billionaire wealth increased by $2.5 trillion last year, growing at a rate three times faster than the previous five years.

  • Since 2020, billionaire wealth has grown by 81%, adding $8.2 trillion to their fortunes. This surge occurred while one in four people globally do not regularly have enough to eat, and nearly half the world's population lives in poverty.

  • According to Oxfam, billionaires are approximately 4,000 times more likely to hold political office than ordinary citizens. A World Values Survey covering 66 countries found that almost half of respondents believe the wealthy often buy elections in their country.

The Spin

Left narrative

Billionaire wealth skyrocketed to $18.3 trillion while one in four people lack regular food, and half the world lives in poverty. The ultra-rich wield political power 4,000 times greater than ordinary citizens, using their fortunes to rig economic rules in their favor. Extreme wealth concentration isn't just economic injustice — it's political poverty for billions whose voices get drowned out by oligarchic control.

Right narrative

Billionaires earn their wealth through voluntary exchanges that benefit everyone — Bezos created Amazon's convenience, and Walton revolutionized retail savings. Taking away fortunes above arbitrary limits punishes innovation and hurts consumers who gain from entrepreneurial drive. Most billionaires already pay millions in taxes, far exceeding the government benefits they receive, making confiscatory policies both unjust and economically harmful.

Nerd narrative

There's a 52% chance that the richest person in the world in 2033 will have a net worth equivalent to or greater than 2% of the United States' GDP at the time, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Prince Harry, Elton John Sue Daily Mail Over Spying Claims

The Facts

  • Prince Harry arrived at London's High Court on Monday for a civil trial against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL), the publisher of the Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday. The case is scheduled to last nine weeks, with Harry expected to give evidence on Thursday.

  • Harry and six other claimants — including Elton John, Elizabeth Hurley, Sadie Frost, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, David Furnish and Simon Hughes — have brought the civil case over alleged unlawful information gathering between 1993 and 2011.

  • The claimants allege that Associated Newspapers hired private investigators to place listening devices in homes and cars, record private phone conversations and access medical records through deceptive means and pay police officers for sensitive information. Associated Newspapers has denied all allegations.

The Spin

Narrative A

The Daily Mail systematically deployed private investigators for decades to illegally invade privacy through phone hacking, blagging medical records and bugging devices. Evidence shows Associated Newspapers spent over £3 million on unlawful surveillance between 1991 and 2011, with investigators bragging about accessing even the Queen's medical records and deliberately concealing wrongdoing from public inquiries. This industrial-scale operation destroyed lives and relationships, leaving victims paranoid and isolated while the Mail profited from stolen intimate details.

Narrative B

This lawsuit represents a manufactured gravy train built on paid witnesses and fabricated evidence rather than genuine wrongdoing. The star witness, Gavin Burrows, now admits his statements were forged under what he describes as blackmail, revealing a scheme where investigators received £5,000 monthly payments and stories were planted on websites specifically to create artificial "watershed moments", circumventing legal time limits. The accusations rely entirely on circumstantial guesswork while legitimate journalism from trusted sources gets smeared.

Nerd narrative

There is a 70% chance that any part of Great Britain will be under monarchy in 2075, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Trump Tells Denmark He Has 'No Obligation' to Exclusively Focus on Peace

The Facts

  • President Donald Trump has reportedly sent a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stating he no "longer feels an obligation to think purely of Peace" after not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump wrote that he could now focus on what is good and proper for the United States of America.

  • This comes as Trump announced on Saturday that he would impose a 10% tariff on eight European countries, including Norway, Denmark, the United Kingdom and Germany, starting Feb. 1. The tariff would increase to 25% in June unless a deal is reached for the complete purchase of Greenland.

  • Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre confirmed receiving Trump's letter and stated he has repeatedly explained that an independent Nobel Committee, not the Norwegian government, awards the prize. The letter came in response to a message from Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb opposing the tariffs.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Trump's push for Greenland addresses legitimate security concerns about an Arctic territory that Denmark cannot adequately defend from Russian and Chinese threats, with NATO having warned Denmark for two decades about vulnerabilities it has failed to address. The president's willingness to use economic leverage demonstrates strength rather than weakness, and his frustration over being denied recognition for genuine peace achievements reflects justified impatience with European allies who benefit from American protection while refusing to take security responsibilities seriously.

Anti-Trump narrative

Trump's unhinged obsession with the Nobel Prize and Greenland reveals a president detached from reality who threatens America's closest allies with tariffs and military action over personal grievances. His bizarre claim that Denmark has no written documents proving ownership of Greenland ignores centuries of established sovereignty and treaties the U.S. itself has signed, while his demand for "Complete and Total Control" risks destroying NATO and isolating America from democratic partners who rightfully view these threats as dangerous blackmail.

Fashion Designer Valentino Garavani Dies at 93

The Facts

  • Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani died at the age of 93 at his home in Rome on Monday, surrounded by his family. He co-founded the Valentino fashion house in 1960 and became one of the pillars of 20th century fashion alongside Giorgio Armani and Karl Lagerfeld.

  • Valentino's creations were worn by celebrities and well-known figures, including Elizabeth Taylor, Jacqueline Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, Julia Roberts and Cate Blanchett. Jackie Kennedy wore a white Valentino gown for her wedding to Aristotle Onassis in 1968.

  • Born in Lombardy in May 1932, Valentino moved to Paris at age 17 to study at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. He worked with Jacques Fath, Balenciaga, Jean Dessès and Guy Laroche before establishing his own maison in Rome.

The Spin

Narrative A

Valentino built an unmatched legacy by staying true to timeless elegance and feminine grace, refusing to chase fleeting trends while dressing the world's most powerful women. His unwavering commitment to classic beauty and luxury proved that real fashion transcends politics and cultural fads — creating garments that celebrated women. His iconic success came from understanding that true style means making women feel beautiful and confident, not pushing ideological agendas through clothing.

Narrative B

Valentino's empire was built on extreme wealth and exclusivity that catered only to the ultra-rich, with Valentino openly dismissing working women and admitting his clients "do not work," but merely engage in charity. Behind the glamorous facade lay an operation sustained by exploiting licensing deals and maintaining an unsustainable luxury bubble, complete with armed guards and bulletproof cars. The brand's survival depended less on design innovation and more on business manipulation and elite relationships.
