Hamas is now being run by a butcher who believes that he is engaged in a messianic struggle to bring about judgment day. Though some may claim that Hamas and men like Sinwar have political goals, the reality is they are led by an extremist ideology that seeks the complete destruction of Israel.

Israel's recent spree of assassinations only provides further evidence that it is simply not interested in a cease-fire or ending the war. Sinwar's appointment ultimately changes very little, as the group has proved capable of adapting to challenges and its structure allows for dynamic leadership.
