The Spin

Republican narrative

This was a shockingly lenient sentence by a Biden-appointed judge who was swayed only because of the criminal's transgender status. He is clearly more concerned about prison conditions than justice for an attempted political assassination. This further illustrates America's two-tiered justice system, in which leftist criminals are rewarded with sympathy while conservatives face harsh sentences for far lesser crimes.

Democratic narrative

Roske deserved a reduced sentence because she abandoned her plan, called 911 on herself, and showed genuine remorse for her actions during a severe mental health crisis. Boardman properly considered her lack of criminal history, her decision to turn herself in, and the harsh conditions she'll face as a transgender woman in a male prison. This sentence balances justice with rehabilitation for someone who ultimately chose not to follow through on her intentions.
