The Facts

  • Ross Lanvin, a 41-year-old middle school math teacher from Manhattan, has been arrested and charged with two counts of possession of child pornography, including materials involving children as young as three years old. His charges carry up to 20 years in prison.

  • The investigation began when Google flagged approximately 150 images and 90 videos containing explicit content on Lanvin's burner account in December 2021, promptly reporting it to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and blocking his access.

  • During a search of Lanvin's apartment last month, law enforcement discovered additional child pornography on at least one of his electronic devices. Lanvin allegedly admitted to accessing child pornography when questioned by authorities.

The Spin

Narrative A

This story is sadly unsurprising given the state of modern-day schooling. NYC public schools have had other cases not only involving child porn possession, but of teachers abusing children inside classrooms while others turn a blind eye. If these continual stories were about Catholic priests instead of teachers, you could bet money on the media covering them extensively.

Narrative B

While isolated cases of teacher misconduct exist, painting educators as pedophiles is absolutely unfair. Data shows clergy abuse rates far exceed those of teachers, yet the media fixates on schools. Most teachers are dedicated professionals, not predators, and systemic issues like underfunding strain schools. Sensationalizing rare incidents distorts reality and unfairly maligns a vital workforce.

Narrative C

While heated debates over this issue are understandable given the sensitive subject matter, the most important task at hand is protecting America's children from all predators. The rates of public school child abuse have become alarmingly high across the English-speaking world, to which federal, state, and local governments have responded miserably. The entire system of reporting and punishing abusers must be overhauled.
