Israel will begin allowing heavy construction equipment and mobile homes to enter Gaza to expedite the release of six living Israeli hostages, according to a senior Israeli official. In recent weeks, Hamas has accused Israel of preventing said materials from entering the strip in violation of the cease-fire agreement.
The news comes as Israel is reportedly preparing for negotiations regarding the second phase of the cease-fire deal in Gaza. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said on Tuesday that Israel demands that Gaza be demilitarized entirely.
Meanwhile, Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya said that the group will release the bodies of four hostages this Thursday and six living hostages on Saturday.
Though Hamas, in many cases, was the main obstacle to achieving an end to this terrible war, the cease-fire has managed to hold. With a deal agreed upon, the hostages will continue to return home, and Israel will be more secure. Though Israel has had to make hard decisions, it will be worth it when peace is finally achieved.
Israel has been forced to make many painful concessions to achieve the return of the hostages, but the goals of the war are the same: Hamas can't rule Gaza, and the strip must be demilitarized. If these goals can be achieved through diplomacy, Israel will continue with the cease-fire. If not, and Hamas refuses to stand down, Israel may be forced to resume the war.
Though it's worth noting that Israel was likely forced into this agreement by the US, Trump's plans for Gaza are both immoral and unrealistic. Israel was founded on ethnic cleansing, and it's not surprising that the country would be supportive of plans that forcibly displace Palestinians from their land. Nonetheless, Palestinians will remain steadfast and resist any plans in which they aren't included.
