The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

The U.S. energy blockade on Cuba is collective punishment — starving an entire population to score political points. Washington's demand that Cuba liberalize its economy before sanctions are lifted amounts to economic coercion dressed up as diplomacy. Leaders from Mexico, Spain, Brazil and Germany have all pushed back, making clear this pressure campaign lacks international legitimacy.

Pro-establishment narrative

Cuba's communist regime is a failing state propped up by Venezuelan oil, and Trump's pressure campaign is finally forcing a reckoning. The U.S. laid out clear, reasonable conditions — free political prisoners, end repression, open the economy — and gave Havana a real deadline to act. Raúl Castro is still pulling strings behind the scenes, which shows this regime has never been serious about reform.
