Germany said it plans to expand its military presence in the Indo-Pacific,Iran threatened no nuclear deal if an IAEA inquiry into man-made uranium particles continues,Iran allegedly attempted to capture a US drone,the Solomon Islands temporarily suspended all naval visits,and US warships sailed through the Taiwan Straitas Taiwan shot down a drone in its airspace.Meanwhile, Israeli strikes caused major destruction in Syria,at least 32 were killed in clashes in Tripoli,and airstrikes hit the capital of Ethiopia's Tigray region.

Russia-Ukraine

This week started with Ukraine announcing on Monday that it had launched a counteroffensive to retake territory in the south,with its armed forces later claiming to have broken through several areas of Russian defenses in the Kherson region.Russia, however, denied these reports, and Ukraine's presidential adviser tapered expectations, describing the counteroffensive as a "slow operation to grind the enemy."Elsewhere, inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visited the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant - controlled by Russia - on Thursday, despite continued attacks that Moscow and Kyiv traded blame for.The 14-member team reportedly toured the plant for a few hours, with several staying at the facility for the remainder of the week and two rumoured to potentially remain permanently,as called for by the head of the IAEA - a request Russia welcomed.Meanwhile, on Friday, G7 countries agreed to impose a price cap on Russian oil.

World Politics

Armed clashes erupted in Baghdad after Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr announced his withdrawal from politics, Brazilian presidential candidates Jair Bolsonaro and Luiz Lula exchanged barbs in a debate,Malaysia's former first lady was sentenced to 10 years for bribery,a Myanmar court convicted ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi of electoral fraud,and Argentina's vice-president escaped a gun attack.Meanwhile, Arizona's governor visited Taiwan to discuss semiconductors,the US ordered Nvidia and AMD to stop selling chips to China,and the US will reportedly revise its Afghan resettlement policy.In other news, Russia halted Nord Stream 1 gas flow to Europe again,the EU toughened travel rules for Russians,Russia's Lukoil Chief died after falling from a hospital window,and thousands attended the funeral of former USSR leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

The Dept. of Justice (DOJ) reviewed documents seized from Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence,the inventory of items was unsealed,and the DOJ accused Trump of hiding classified documents.Meanwhile, a judge ruled that Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp must testify in a Trump probe,and the Fulton County District Attorney asked a judge to reject Sen. Lindsey Graham's efforts to quash his subpoena.In other news, Biden said extreme MAGA Republicans threaten US democracy,the US Secret Service assistant director retired,Ginni Thomas was alleged to have pressured lawmakers to challenge the 2020 election results,and Mary Peltola beat Sarah Palin in the Alaska special congressional election.

Civil Liberties

A report said China may have committed crimes against humanity in Xinjiang,the UN said 6M Afghans are at risk of famine,and six of 43 missing students in Mexico were alleged to have been given to the army.Meanwhile, a KKK plaque was discovered at the West Point military academy in the US,Jamaica appointed a special team to investigate workers' conditions on Canadian farms,and a Palestinian prisoner ended his hunger strike following a release deal.
